I am not really a great fan of Arnold couplers - too bulky, not prototypical. I am thinking of converting my locos to Kadee (Micro Trains) couplers, either the N scale version, or even Z scale couplers.
Unfortunately, this will not be a drop-in issue. Any experience that you can share with me`I want to convert my Kato C11, C62 and D51.
I'm not sure on the kato locos. Do they house the same coupler box at the rear as the freight cars do?
The Micro ace c11 does and i recently placed in some of kato's cheap knuckle ones.
Issue with the micro ace one is that the rear wheels are loose and can jump up and down a fair bit meaning you need to reduce the amount of free will these wheels have or prepare for uncoupling on slopes or bumpy track like switches or uneven rail joiners.
This could be similar to the kato one.
I have also done kato micro trains branded couplers. Kinda of annoying needing to glue the coupler together. While they do hold better they are also less flexible meaning more chance for something to go wrong on smaller curves.
you could give these a whirl probably not great for on the loco but good for others like freight etc
