Just wondering if anyone knows when the livery of the DF50s was changed from the brown to the orange and grey?

Cheers,

Mark.

That's a good question.  A guess would be around 1961, as that was when there was a big timetable revision, and a speeding up of services (the famous san-roku-tou revision).  JNR was trying to improve its image, and moving away from the more somber colors was likely a part of that (as was the lessening need to hide the effects of soot from steam locomotives).

1956 was the year the DF50 class was introduced.  The brown livery lasted into the early 1960s as the first DD51s wore brown and they were a later build than the DF50.

Early DD13s wore the brown livery as did DD14s.

Hope this helps.

Mark,

FWIW, EF 64 37 is still in brown livery and in service @ Kofu.  I'm not sure that JNR repainted every single loco and this might go for the DF50s as well.  Some may have been brown through to retirement.

FP, I 've seen photos of DD13s in brown, but I didn't realise DD51s carried it was well - interesting. Something else to think about!

Nige, I've noticed there's a couple of recent examples of electric locos running around in the brown livery, but I wonder if they're not repaints for heritage services or events? That's my impression, and if that's the case, it's a perfect excuse to have a brown DF50 on an otherwise modern layout.

All the best,

Mark.

Both EF64 37 and EF64 1001 were repainted brown fairly recently...EF64 37 was (I believe) to mark the centenery of the Chuo main line. Neither of these classes carried brown from new and as the EF64s were introduced in 1964, it is fairly safe to assume brown was no longer applied to at least new electrics by this time...

i think you need a larger layout to accomoodate all these models to run through your kofu station accurately.

The information on the DD51 was based on the MA release of DD51 1 in brown some years ago. This had a different cab to the production model.

I think the EF62 were first introduced in the brown livery as were the ED61 and other electric locos of this era.

My Kofu Station track plan has the right number of platforms and passing tracks.  I wasn't going to add the sidings at the east end ... perhaps I will now as I already have one blue EF 64.  I may as well get the brown EF 64 37 and have them both there.

i'm talking more space on either end to have them running off down additional lines to loop back around and pass by kofu again. could get awfully cramped on your layout having all your consists of communter services

btw still waiting on that track plan
