Looks like I'll have to chase some more overtime next year to help pay for one or two of these...

I think these are my favourite Japanese SLs.
Cheers,
Mark.

Nice, Mark, I like these a lot, too, but I wonder what the quality would be like vis-a-vis Tenshodo brass models - I think I like the Hokkaido version especially.

If their previous releases are an indication, quality should be good. I can't speak for brass, as it's too pricey for me. Anyway, a good move for Tenshodo, though I'm not a fan of the type, I may be tempted to purchase the Shibetsu line version, as I lived in the area for two years. Now if Tenshodo would offer an 8600 or C50, or reissue their C55...

John, the only Tenshodo brass I've owned were some US prototype models from many years ago, so I can't make a direct comparison. But I do have some of their recent "mixed-media" models, and I'm very impressed with them.
I have two of these Toshiba steeplecabs, which are very nicely detailed and finished. They run superbly, and are DCC ready.
This C58 is a beautiful model - my indifferent photography doesn't do it justice. Detail, finish and running are all excellent. If the C11 are of similar quality, I'll be very happy with them.
BB, I'd be tempted by any of the locos you mention, but especially the 8620. A clas with many interesting detail variations.
Cheers,
Mark.

Hi everybody, I habitually lurk here, but decided to drop a few lines. I've always been fascinated by asian and japanese steam locomotive distinctive styles. It's only recently I started to look out for HO models.
I've been trying to get a little bit more infos about new 1/80 plastic C11 by Tenshodo but with little success. What should be expected for minimum radius operation? According to Hobby Search it is DCC ready (8 pin). There's a cryptic note about possible sound system, what is it?
Finally, it's still possible to place reservations on three models at Hobby Search. I would have been interested about their background story before deciding what is suiting my interested.
Model available includes:
Tohoku Style, Hokkaido Style with snow plows and spark-arrestor (?) and finally a "standard" version (what standard?. What era do they represent?
Thank you very much!

The type you select should be based on the area of Japan you are modeling. The c11 was a versatile class, and was used widely throughout Japan, up to nearly the end of steam operations on JNR in the early 70's. The spark arrestor is a device placed on the top of the chimney, and featured a rotating screen to catch errant embers. As far as the standard type, it is a kind of generic model, but likely close to what would be operated in the Kanto area around Tokyo, or perhaps on the dry winter Pacific Ocean side of Japan, from Kanto down south to Kansai.
Sorry, I can't tell you anything about DCC, not an area of interest. Perhaps someone else could fill you in.

Had an email from HS regarding these models:
The pre-order item listed below
Steam Locomotive Type C11 Forth Edition Dome Square (Model Train)
(
http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10171810
)
Was originally priced at 49,000 yen,
but has been changed to 45,000 yen.
Not often you see that happen, I suspect.
Cheers,
Mark.
