Cars of this design on small private railways were second-hand 1920s vintage rolling stock, off the Seibu line in the case of the Kambara Railway. Many small lines could have cars of same general design.  Echigo Kotsu stock appears to have been tan and tangerine.

This is a Japanese Wikipedia article translated with Google translate.  It has a map, station list, time line and roster notes.  But not all of the article translates. Note this was a special narrow gauge line at 762mm versus 1067mm on JR lines and 1435mm standard gauge as on Shinkansen lines which are standard gauge.

The company continues as a bus operation.

Thanks Bill. The word-by-word translation of google translator led to an almost uncomprensible text. I'll have a look on pictures your links.
Here are some more pix http://www.geocities.jp/tnk_ko/r_pic/EchigoKoutu.html

Dear sportinglife

Here is the station list written by Kanji & hiragana.
 http://w01.tp1.jp/~a073009361/ALAS/PR/kk/echigo.htm

I'm ready to translate these station names if you want.

best regards,

P.S.
My mother was lived in Tochio and often used Tochio line, called "Tottetsu"
but I was born in 1974 so I haven't seen. OMG.
