Audio/Samples/Sound Effects of Japanese Trains.

To All,

A request for audio of the trains of Japan. Our Japanese Train Set for Transport Tycoon Deluxe needs to be taken to the next level with sound effects. I recently attempted to extract steam engine running sounds from youtube clips but had a lot of issues getting around the doppler effect, as all recordings are usually from one position. Therefore looping such sounds would phase in and out.

What I require is external sound effects for all locomotives/trains in Japan. Well, not all, the ones we've drawn and coded. I want to start with shinkansen and so I require:

  -horns

  -'start sound' (acceleration, gear changing)

-'running sound' (loop-able clip preferably one that doesn't phase)

  -'slowing sound' (breaking and/or deceleration)

and so, my current issue stands that all platform recordings either have hideous amounts of background noise, or the good old doppler. Luckily, since bullet trains are gigantic, I can get a looping sound from the two middle cars of the 'whoosing' past, since they're reasonable symmetric once the train is half way through the station.

The issue then is, is this how they sound when they're running along the track? Is this full speed? etc...

Horns are a nightmare, as shinkansen hardly ever use them!

Recordings from in the trains may be acceptable, if they're not too muffled and will merge seamlessly with the running sound.

I suppose all I'm really looking for is a collection of sites from Japan where the author has recorded trains... but I just needed to get this out there anyway :)

Thanks!

Was going to suggest the webcam I'm strapped to, but that's got way too much background sound. Might be best if you use a pocket recorder on the trip in two weeks.

Steven - When we do location shoots that is exactly what we do to get isolated sounds. Do you have access to a portable DAT recorder with a directional mic? You will get some background noise but this type of mic (usually a shotgun mic) if aimed at the specific sound source will get the specific sound you want. After you record the sounds you want, by using a sound editing program you can build a sound track to you liking.

DAT recorders are very portable but expensive. The quality is excellent since it is recording on a digital tape.

Is this the type of recording you want to do?

stevenh, if you can get such equipment, I would pay cash money for a good set of sound effects recorded from Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku trains (entering station, departing station, and hardest to get of all, door closing sounds). Looping is not a priority, but clean sound sans background noise is…I want very badly to have full sound effects for my Akihabara Station diorama…

Shashinka,

The audio isn't really that bad from the webcam. Low background noise can probably be filtered out. I just want to start with shinkansens :)

Bernard, you're talking to a complete amateur here!

I still don't even have a DSLR, let alone purchasing a sound recorder and directional microphone :)

I looked at personal recorders back on my last trip, but didn't want to fork out ~$100+ for one... I suppose this project just isn't worth that much cash.

I resorted to recording a video with my camera pointed to the floor and got some OK sound... but so much background noise... as cameras will try to pick up whatever they can :(

CaptOblivious,

It's unfortunate, but I don't think I'll have the equipment or be in the area to get the right sounds for you.

Steven - Sorry I got carried away. I happen to have access to this type of equipment from work.

Here is what you can do if you want to improve the sound on your camera, is it possible to hook in an external mic on your camera and do you know of anybody who can lend you a small mic? (don't buy it!) The external mic will improve the sound quality.

Hi Steven,

I still think you should come over to the dark side and get working on Locomotion... I play that for hours!!!!

Oh man, I love Locomotion. It's in the CD-ROM tray as we speak. I spent four days last month on one city.

I feel your pain ;)

I'm nearly 100% opposed to locomotion... it's just too brown and green for me... I love the colour and gameplay of OTTD. But I respect your opinions :P

Steven- this seems to be a good site with many recordings of trains in real audio format.  If you can navigate the Japanese, you may find something.  Use of sound files for personal use is permitted, anything else (republishing, commercial use) requires permission of the author.

I'd love to see an English version of A-7 or A-8 (or even the new A-9)

I had encountered this site before, but I found that most of the audio files wouldn't work for me, not even using an older version of RealPlayer. Any tips on using the site?

Hmm, I found this site yesterday, and as I didn't have RealPlayer on my notebook, I downloaded the latest free version.  The files seem to play fine for me. When you click on a file, it gives you a choice to listen to it (RealPlayer automatically opens), or save to file.
