too bad his photos are usually washed out and hard to see how he models these. jeff
His description says the glass is decaled not openings with glazing. Sounds like a big hunk of styrene. "You are bidding on an N scale (1/160) high rise hotel. It is scratch built from styrene. It has been painted off white and decaled for a Hilton Hotel as shown. It measures 10" high, 14" wide and 11" deep. It has a pool on one end (it is recessed a bit lower than the deck area) and a tennis court on the other. The right side is a parking garage. The 'glass' is decaled. The building is finished off with matte clearcoat."

Yeah, I saw this other day, and the poor quality photo's really throws me off. Someone put a lot of time into these buildings, and even the worst digital camera can take a photo better than these. And why would you purposefully want to hide any flaws in your eBay photos? That just leads to all sorts of problems. I don't get it, but these issues keep me well away from these auctions.

Well here's the update. I finally got through all my boxes. I organized all my unbuilt kits and made a detailed list as to what was in each box. I have over 50 boxes packed with my models and unbuilt building kits.
I hauled up several kits and hopefully will get back into building some stuff in the next week. :D
It's been tough working and getting re organized from my move.
I'll post some pics in the comming week.

$100 is rather expensive for a few sheets of styrene and some ink.. At first, judging from the photo's alone, I thought it was all cardboard...

i agree, its not worth what it looks like, just an interesting design/approach for some to noodle on.
sorry i meant to post the weston model by jonathan and forgot. it really is a nice one and very interesting use of the atlas high rise panels, exactly what i plan to do with my kits when i get to it! i even have an assembled atlas rectangle i picked up for $5 at the train show i hope to tear apart for the panels. the panels are pretty easy to make if you want with tinted acetate and just scribe in the lines they have, just have to be very square and even with your straight edge and use a plex/plastic scriber.
also an interesting simple penthouse for the tomix high rise is to use a first floor section on the roof! just need to put some hand rails across the open areas, but then it looks like a large office on either side and a large open patio in the center on each side. you see this sort of thing in a lot of swanky high rise top floors.
cheers

Good ideas Jeff. I really like that you're 'recycling' already built Atlas skyscrapers rather than cutting up unbuilt ones! They seem so rare (or are they? ) that I'd be hard pressed to cut one up (although I basically did, so I don't know what I'm talking about. Maybe I should just shut up ). On a similar note....I got inspired by the photo on P. 64-65 of the Tomix Diorama book (and sorry to those of you that don't have one...its a favorite of mine!). The creators of that city scene used the window sections of the Tomix High Rise to create some pretty unique looking skyscrapers. Basically, added their own structure around the glass section, and what appears to be painting the small window rectangle rows. They look good and don't look like so many of the other ubiquitous high rises now out there (my original one included!). Plus, these buildings are still in good supply and they're pretty cheap for what you get. I can imagine all of us sitting around looking for these things on eBay at $100 a pop in a few years! I'm also going to do a 'do-over' on my 'Greenmax modular building'. My original design was uninspired and I am not at all happy with it, but seeing some of the stuff done by others (well, at least the Greenmax promotional folks!) gets me sort of thinking a bit more creatively a second time around.

yeah well the one i got for $5 had some glue mucks along the corners. was first thinking of doing a bunch of vertical slats on them from strip styrene and corners to cover them up, but more thinking now of chopping them up for parts...
did you also see in the diorama book how the turned the tomix high rise on its side to create a large walkway above tracks in the big station. quite cool as the corner windows became sort of skylights along the top corner of the walkway. would be a very tall walk way so maybe they were also offices or something above the tracks as well...
im finally getting back to planning my basement layout so starting to think what kind/size of high rise modern stuff i would want in it. starting to think more medium level and topping most thing at 10-15 stories and not going for the taller stuff as i probably wont have the room for a big build up. although may try to engineer a thin highrise 3D backdrop in one area with taller stuff maybe. cheat and only do a 1/3rd depth.
cheers

I know this kind of a double post... but I thought I'd post my latest building on here. If you want to see all the photos of this building and how I made it, you can see them here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/55063726@N00/sets/72157625184595567/with/5233741708/I made it from this little building here. Here's some pics of the final building.. I've kept the top unglued as I still want to be able to slide the back off so I can add lights and adjust floors when it comes to building the city. I got the signs from a business magazine...the take the train sign came from an insert in the HO Walther's Catalog. Everything else is pretty self explanatory. Again there's more pix on my flickr page I posted. On to the next project. :D

It is interesting to me how much the period one is modeling impacts the type of buldings which fit in. I've frequently wondered why people are making such tall buildings as when I lived in Tokyo in the 80's we had, for example, an apartment on the 4th floor of a 6 floor building and my office on the 9th floor of the nondescript TBS Kaikan building in Akasaka was one of the higher spots around (one could see Fuji-san on a good day). Most of the buildings in the Roppongi 1-Chome area in those days were not very tall except for the then-new Ark Hills complex.
But I noticed on my last trip that the old TBS building has been replaced by this taller version and there are many fantasic new structures so Japan today looks much different than what I am modelling. For those who have collections which include the latest trains, tall buildings are perfect.

Yes they do look like decals or just printed on foam core board. For me the most interesting one is the "Taco Bell" store, but most of the structures look too boxy, I guess that due to the lack of contour.

Just got this building in the mail from Yahoo! Japan Auctions via Shopping Mall Japan. A lot of times bidding can get pretty intense on Yahoo JP, but this building was overlooked and I got it for the a STEAL of a price of 1600 yen (about $20). Shipping, of course, added up to about twice that amount, but I'm pleased as this is much nicer building than the first one I got from Japan - and a lot cheaper! The back wall comes off nice and cleanly, so I'll be able to add floors, details, and lighting. I'm thinking that this building will be a hospital, but haven't decided yet. A helipad on the roof would look pretty cool.

OOOOOOO, that looks nice! this is the kind of construction i have been noodling on with the alternating strips of glass and solid. nice how its broken up with the more solid face element as well. does look like a hospital as they always have new sections added on and multiple styles on the buildings. now you are going to have to make a whole scad of hospital beds!
post a few more pictures when you get a chance!
cheers

Did we ever mention these buildings from Germany on this forum? The images are from Luetke Modellbahn's website, so I hope they are okay with me 'sharing' their product here on this forum. http://www.luetke-modellbahn.de/shop/index.php?cPath=92&osCsid=3bd3523ed2a5fe6201edd07cb90d9c86I've ordered their furniture and have the round building on order (apparantly its still in production), but the first one is quite striking. They have quite a few unusual building items and details that may or may not work on a Japanese (or American, etc...) layout. Another one:

ha, didnt look at the buildings when you posted this company for the furniture! interesting stuff. like the grand stands, while you could scratch build those with strip styrene it would be a ton of work! http://www.luetke-modellbahn.de/shop/product_info.php?cPath=92_128&products_id=551&osCsid=3bd3523ed2a5fe6201edd07cb90d9c86unfortunately the shipping rates are pretty hefty and the dollar/euro exchange sucks... ouch on the price of the round building, but nice looking! you gotta let us know when you get this one! i keep hoping to stumble along some plastic sheet at the craft store or home despot that has a square cut out pattern like that of an n scale office building! then could just slice and dice up as desired! this may be a future project to work on with my friend with the laser cutter. would be a dirt simple project to do long distance, some different sized/spacing square patter. cheers jeff

an interesting kitbash of an atlas rectangular high rise. they did a good job in adding both an interesting shape and some contrasting materials to not have it all the black glass. not sure about the shape with the rectangular entry area, but you do see odd shaped buildings on the higher floors especially where there may be air right issues (ie sqft for the height you want to go) or visual issues with the buildings around it. This is really interesting! I quite like the look of the 'concrete' sides rather than the full glass...feels more 'right' somehow to me. Not as crazy about the angle, but at least its different!

Quinntopia, yes i agree it was much better feel with the contrast of the concrete sides with the glass sides. nice tomix facility! i like the vertical additions to the window area. something very reminiscent of the bethesda naval hospital building! here is an interesting idea to do with the kato high rises, use an entry floor as a penthouse floor. one of the jrm members has a pict up of it. i suggested he add some hand rails with glass supports as well. makes for a nice top floor! http://japanrailmodelers.org/photos/fredslayout/pages/page_4.htmlcheers jeff

Both of those look great! I've got 3 of those buildings right now, so I may have to steal some of those ideas. Although, at least one of mine is getting a hole chopped in the back for a digital pictureframe/electronic billboard.

Rankodd,
ill email you a few pictures out of some of the tomix books with some other ideas for the tomix high rises.
one they used on a very large layout was to lay it on its side and use it as a very large overhead walkway/building over some station tracks. quite interesting!

Are you talking about Tomix Layout Room? I actually have copies of 1-3 - there are some very cool ideas in there! Plan to see a 711 in the bottom of one of those Tomix towers! :)
