Yup, though "only" 400 yen off the normal price. Second-hand of course, but as-new condition. 4000 - 6000 yen does seem to be the normal price range for the less exotic second-hand MicroAce steamers anyway.

Some really cheap things and some really expensive things. Cheap things mostly because careful ventures into the JNR late 80s AC Tohoku era. Expensive things because of more narrow gauge projects. Rokuhan's shorty motors for this autum have my gears in motion again.

Bought 4 sets from Tam Tam and the Kato arrived just yesterday.  So excited to have the 383 as I actually rode it and had the end car all to myself like it was my own private observation car.

50 series coaches have also been on my wishlist for a while now, although I'm thinking of using them together with a DE10 or so. The AC areas are a no-go for me; I've long decided upon staying within the 1500V region as for my model train purchases.

Partially yes. That ED75 was my first Japanese model train. An older Kato model with the skirts attached to the bogies. It's more of a nostalgic choice than a rational one, but for 2000 yen... The ED75 in the museum has diamond pantographs, of which I'm no fan though.

 

Maybe I'll get one or two 455 Series (preferably with square headlights) later and call it a day for AC equipment. Fist I'd like to concentrate on narrow gauge stuff again. A visit to the Keiben Matsuri in October is already in the agenda! :)

Just ordered a Kato 115 Shonan Colour 4-car set from a seller here in the UK...only £42 or about 6000 yen (I think?). Not too bad IMO.

I should add I have an EF66 on the way...well, stuck in Japan, it's being sent by SAL as I have no desire to pay ParcelForce's ludicrous (and illegal) handling charge for EMS packages. (The Royal Mail tends to deliver SAL packages from Japan no questions asked, doesn't even ask for VAT or anything!)

I just got my hands on a train set that I really didn't want to get (for reasons of not wanting to start yet another private rail company), but the price is really good and I am quite a fan of its colors and unique features, that I just couldn't resist...

 

 

Gotta love these double deckers! Somehow, the colors just blend in perfectly!

Nice! I quite like the Keihan express livery, and the double decker car is also interesting. The predecessor of this train, the Keihan 3000 series, can even been run alongside Seibu, Nankai or Kintetsu trains as they do on the Toyama Chihō Railway and Oigawa Railway. Operating alongside a steam train is also amongst the possibilities.

I just received the Tomytec Kumamoto Railway Kumamon 2-car set, along with the TM-08R power chassis and the pantographs.

I've been focusing my Japanese interests on Kyushu for a while now. I have a friend with family in Kyushu (Nagasaki) and my city of Sunnyvale, California, has an home stay exchange arrangement (sort of a long weekend B-n-B program) with our sister city Iizuka in Kyushu, so this seemed like an appropriate model to add to my collection. And the Kumamon bear is kinda cute anyway!

My aforementioned friend also just gifted me with a copy of Early Japanese Railways: 1853-1914, a well-researched chronicle of the historical and social background to the Meiji Era development of Japan's railways. This is a great resource for understanding the impact of railways in the modernization of Japan during that period.

I was refreshing the FedEx tracking website throughout the day when it finally changed to "Delivered".  Thankfully the end of the work day was near and I packed it in and headed home.  After arriving I found a nice sized box that was very well packed with this inside:

 

I love the original Shinkansen shape as well as the followup 100:

The 500 is probably my favorite Shinkansen shape:

Had space in the large case to combine the two:

This is a nicely detailed model:

I am very happy I added this set at the last minute.  It is a really cool looking train and the model is very nicely detailed:

I am more than happy with my new additions.  Most of them I have ridden at some time in the past so they are especially sentimental for me.

The package was very well done and the trains are in great condition with only a few missing instructions/data sheet and transfers, but I knew that when I ordered them.  Now I just need to figure out how to get the transfers.

Yeah. The older shinkansen brings back memories for me too. I was lucky enough to get to ride both the 0 and the 100 when I first visited Japan.

I was surprised how large the 0 cars are when compared to local trains and even newer shinkansen. A 500 car is similar in length but appreciably lower.

I saw the original NEX pass by a good bit when I was living in Japan and always though it was a good looking train. I don't find it to be a sexy shape like the 500 for example, but a nice combo of shape and use of color.
