Kyoto Railway Museum rolling stock, news thread

Rather than start separate topics for every separate news item about the new museum, perhaps one thread will work better, at least until it's open.

While searching for some pictures of the current state of construction, I found two interesting things:

Some freight equipment will be displayed: EF66 35, DD51 756, and a container and YO5000 caboose in the livery of the container express Takara. Kato has a cool model of this, item 10-489. Link: http://response.jp/article/2015/02/19/244721.html

Another thing I found was this facebook page: http://ja-jp.facebook.com/kyototeppaku.umekoji . It doesn't have the 'official' icon, but it looks good and has a lot of pictures of bringing in rolling stock, restoration, etc.

Lastly, how long until JR Kyushu needs to replace or refurbish the Railway History Museum at Mojiko Station? It looks like a cool Meiji-era building, but... :grin

Nice! Yoshitsune has been made steamable again...when I was at Umekoji last year they had her in pieces.

Ah, those images are of the 'transfer ceremony' of the rolling stock from JRW/JRF to the museum.

Still not finding any good images of the progress of the construction :(...

Here's a not-new blog post with a map of where the additions will be, actually I'd pictured the majority of the new construction north of the existing roundhouse, not west.  Good to know.  I'm also intrigued by the "Umekoji JR Apartment" across the San'in tracks.  Is this company housing or available to the public?  I may need to live there :grin.

It would be nice if they took the last remaining EH10, EH10 61, out of her cage in Higashi-Awaji Minami Park in Osaka and spruced her up to display with the Takara container train.

Sure would be.  I wonder what prompted them to put up that fencing.

Must have been for safety, I wouldn't think vandalism would be as much of a problem in Japan.

When I went to have a look at her in 2011 I was reminded of those photos animal rights groups put up of bears in cages no bigger than they are.

More interesting pictures on the FB page http://www.facebook.com/kyototeppaku.umekoji , and 2 former Twilight Express cars on their way to the new museum http://railf.jp/news/2015/04/15/172000.html , SURONEFU 25 501 and SUSHI 24 1.  The article points out that the yellow stripe has been removed.  I guess we'll never see the original formation run again...

Darn, then that's a no-go destination for my planned Kansai/No. Kyushu trip during school spring break.  Will have to wait until summer holidays, or perhaps a weekend in June.

I make it a rule not to go anywhere during golden week- too crowded, and anyway it's too soon after my spring break.  Typically there are a few days in the middle I have to work anyway (I'm a schoolteacher, so taking off when classes are in session is problematic). I use the time to relax at home and recover from whatever "good ideas" are foisted on us by the management in the new academic year :)

I'd go.  By the time I get to go, the crowd numbers will have dropped.  Although according to the lastest figures, visitors to Japan jumped 43% in October to 1.82M thank in influx of Chinese tourists.  October 2015 was the second highest month on record for incoming tourists.  Now I need to find another quiet month to visit.

The museum was opened for the press on Tuesday. Some views of the interior and displays, some still with plastic covering, etc.

I had a leaflet for this place bundled with an order from Japan a week or so ago. The bit that particularly struck me was that they bothered to list a load of foods available in the restaurant, including some very spiffy Shinkansen bento boxes. Here it'd just get a small mention and maybe a photo on the back page!

Also impressed to see that all of the stock will be lit up, and it looks as though a lot of it will be accessible.

Could we get a pic or scan of said leaflet? :).

I'll see if I can find it tomorrow, think it got buried in a pile of magazines!

Edit, had a look, no sign. Have a horrible feeling it may have gone with the recycling on Tuesday. You can probably find something similar on their website though.

It's been a while...

a promotional wrap applied to a 223 series train: https://twitter.com/tetsunahitotoki/status/693958392067391488

a vid by Sankei News, on January 20th it was 100 days until the opening:

a "ride by" on the San'in Line between Tanbaguchi and Kyoto.  It's at 2:05; not a very good view, but it looks substantial.  It's in this section that they're going to build the new station (http://www.jnsforum.com/community/topic/9730-jr-west-new-station-at-kyoto-railway-museum-in-2019/)

The English site has been up for a while.  I wasn't really fussed with it as it was all rendered images.  Hopefully as they get closer to the opening date.  They can have some real pictures.

I think the roof and the steam maintenance facility will be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
