Kato E5 - First Run!

The Australian rural setting is priceless.

I knew we didn't have to make dedicated Shinkansen tracks to get them running on our standard gauge!  :)

(Imagine it trying to get around the bends near Picton)

G'day Steve,

We ran the E5 on our generic North American layout Kelly River:

As much as we would have liked to run it on our Waterfall layout we couldn't, as the cars wouldn't clear the platforms. :(

Here's a bit more video of the E5:

I reckon an E5 would look good snaking around the Maldon curve!

Cheers,

Mark.

Happy boy! Thanks!

Jeff

He sure was Jeff. And as you said, the rest of the members were quite keen to see the thing running as well. We had a captive audience! :)

Cheers,

Mark.

That is one happy boy! Perhaps a translation of what he said would be nice? He sure looked very delighted! A 10-car HO E5 will bring joy to anyone!  :)  I saw the poster behind with some train specifications perhaps?

Now that I think about it, I saw Kelly River at Liverpool a few years ago. That bridge is amazing! Who designed and built it?

Not only will Australians NEVER enjoy shinkansen on their railways, but they will NEVER enjoy shinkansen on their Australian model layouts either, or so it seems ... ;)

You're not wrong, he was very happy with his present! Unfortunately his voice was still a bit nasal after his recent surgery when I made this video.

He said, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is the rocket train from Japan. Goodnight Australia!"

Ever since he could talk he's callled the shinkansen stock "rocket trains". I asked him why and he gave me the obvious answer - "Because they go like a rocket!".

The poster you saw was issued a few years ago by the railway I work for, when we were still called CityRail. It featured all of the EMU and DMU stock we were running at the time. I can take a better photo of it and post it if you like. Otherwise there is some basic info about our fleet here:

All the best,

Mark.

Glad you like it! The bridge started out as a Walthers kit, but it had to be extensively modified to make it work repeatedly and reliably. Among our club members there are two signal engineers, two signal technicians and an electrical engineer. They formed a team and made it all work. Apart from the mechanism, the electrical side is fully interlocked with the signals and track power.

My apologies, that signal box could fit at any Main South station :)

You're not wrong. The first time I saw it it reminded me of Medway Junction.

Sad but true. Neither side of politics here has any real interest in developing our rail network.

I'm working on that! I'm going to cut back the platform faces when nonbody is looking! :)

Cheers,

Mark.
