Have you rode the BR928 diesel cars? They will be phased out soon for new rail cars so it may have been the last time you could see them. They will be largely be replaced by these the BR620 and BR622: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alstom_Coradia_LINT#LINT_54

A lot of German stations have these identical coin operated HO layouts, this one is a Düsseldorf. They have been there for years, I remember seeing them in 2008.

We rode them from Munich Ost to Freilassing and Erndtebrück to Marburg.

Anyway, any suggestions for mainline trainwatching (lineside or end of platform) in the greater Munich region, say within a 1 hour radius of Munich Hbf?  Good mix of freight and passenger.  I may have three hours or so to kill on a possible future summer trip (last day before flying back to Japan on an evening flight from Munich AP)

Here is another installment, I've been thinking about my next trip already.

 

The Schwarzwaldbahn was closed for track work between Offenburg and Hausach so we went by Karlsruhe tram/train up the Murg Vallley railway to Freudenstadt then then an Ortenau S-Bahn railcar to Hausach. We continued from there to our overnight stay at Triberg.

 

 

A class 50 2-10-0 is on display outside Triberg station.

 

 

That afternoon I headed to Villingen to ride HZL's shuttle from Trossingen Bf to Trossingen Stadt.

One suggestion I would make from personal experience is Munich Ostbahnhof, just a couple of stops from Munich Hbf by S-Bahn or you can catch a No.19 tram or U5 subway line from downtown.  You see long distance passenger trains to and from Salzburg and beyond as well as freight.

Thanks for the Ostbahnhof suggestion.  I had a more rural location in mind, actually looking at the Munich-Rosenheim Railway line, some spots, such as Assling which is just beyond the S-bahn perimeter, look quite promising and fit my criteria.  Also from Ostbahnhof, there is the Munich-Muhldorf railway, which is on its outer reaches single track, with some sections semaphore signaled, and according to Wikipedia, is one of the busiest single track lines in the country, with heavy chemical traffic.  Some tempting choices have to be made.

We used the line via Muhldorf to get from Munich to Berchtesgaden, it is a line I woudn't mind visiting again.
