At the recent InnoTrans 2014, JR East had a driving simulator for the E5 at their booth, all of the cab displays were converted to English.

why would a japanese train running in japan with japanese speaking crews have a "door closed" annunciator in english?

 

about the only reason I can think of (other than international marketing) is to make "door closed" (in English) a special tokenized phrase so that there is no chance of miscommunication in other contexts (such as "is the door of the driver cab to the passenger compartment closed?"   that's a legitimate thing to do.

 

in other news, driving a shinkansen looks to be exhilarating for the first few hours.  after which, it looks more like a challenge not to fall asleep at a job that can be learned in a few days.  yes, i know i know about the famous 'stop within 10cm of target' capabilities, but given that all drivers do it, i figure it's something you just pick up soon enough, like riding a bicycle.
