Hi everyone!

I am Ewan, I am an Australian living in China. I model JR East in Tokyo, between Ueno & Omiya. I am slowly collecting my fleet.... Lots of long trains

Welcome! What makes you want to model Japan?

(Just out of curiosity because I was wondering the other day - are there any models of Chinese trains readily available?)

Anyway I hadn't heard of this Quinntopia chap, so will take a look.

Thanks!

My love of Japanese trains was started when JR West & JR Central introduced the 100 Series Grand Hikari sets on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, way back in 1989.... Evan as a nine-year old, I knew I wanted one! But growing up in Brisbane, Japanese models were always far too expensive for me. So I started out in N-Scale by modeling Amtrak & UP near Los Angeles.

I came to live and work in China in 2004, in 2007 I went back to Brisbane for the Chinese New Year, and ended up bringing all my US trains over here along with a bunch of Kato Unitrack. In 2009 I found a few hobby shops in Hong Kong that sell Japanese models, and I switched.... I've collected more trains in the last 5 years than I ever had before! I ended up choosing to model JR East around Tokyo because of the enormous range of trains that operate there. My fleet covers Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen, the Tohoku Mainline, Keihin-Tohoku Line and Saikyo Line....

There are lots of models of Chinese State Railways equipment, but it is mostly in HO Scale, and I am a big fan of N-Scale, plus while typical apartments here are bigger than in Japan, they are still not really that big.... Mine is only about 85 square meters.

Welcome!

Can't quite figure out why neither kato nor tomix made a CRH2 from their E2s.  Aren't they basically the same?  Seems like a no brainer to the company who does it first.

Welcome!

Nice to hear about your collection! Hoping to see some pictures or videos of them will be nice! I reckon you're using Tabao for the N scale trains?

Jeff, I usually order stuff via the retailer in Hong Kong, particularly EZ-Transcom, as they are the primary importer for KATO. And I usually get some deep discounts from them! Plus, the city I live in, Guangzhou is pretty close to Hong Kong, only about two hours train ride away.

I don't generally use Taobao or other online retailers, can be a hassle to get things repaired or replace if there is a problem with the trains!

As for Kato or Tomix using their E2-1000s to produce a CRH2, it would be easy, since there are only really cosmetic differences between the cab-cars and the pantographs, but I am guessing that they haven't done it yet because N-Scale is a pretty small part of the hobby here. And the hobby itself is still pretty small!

That's great you have a good supplier in Hong Kong! Having a local source is really important if there are problems.

Jeff,

Yeah, a local supplier is great, especially as in China & Hong Kong, they will check the product for you BEFORE you buy! Great idea for customer service and satisfaction.

Ewan,

If you do need stuff that you can't get locally there are a few great Japanese sources and a couple are on the forum and have excellent service (modeltrainplus and loco1hobby).

As Ewan says, there is a fair number of HO scale Chinese models on the market, most of them made by Bachmann. As an HO scale modeller, and a fan of big steam, I've been tempted by them more than once. If nothing else, I'd like to get the model of the DB3 streamlined tank engine.

Spam deleted ;)

No reason to post in a thread that you're reported spam btw. Plus, it looks weird once the spam is deleted and people won't know who was spamming. (Of course, I could delete the 'spam reported' posts, but I don't like deleting posts in general :))

Roger that! Very prompt moderating action indeed!   :)
