Locomotives for the Orient Express

I have a Kato 10-561 and 10-562 Orient Express set. I was also lucky to be able to acquire a Kato 2016-2 D51 498 and a Kato 3038 EF58-61 locomotives to pull this beautiful train.

Both of these locomotives are extremely difficult to find and when you can, they are very, very expensive. What I think is odd is that Kato has released a European version of the Orient Express but no word on any locomotives to pull them. I did find on one website the Kato Hobbytrain 2830 electric locomotive but it is a future release.

Are there any other currently produced locomotives that would be appropriate to pull the Orient Express in Europe? What prototypical locos pull (pulled) it?

Any thoughts or comments on locomotives for the Orient Express? Thank you for your input.

And the original train in 1988:

I would suggest the DR BR01, because it's available in N scale:

(1988 is epoch IV)

Exact loco that were specific used for longer time with the orient express:

Arnold steam locomotive 2-C-1+tender class BR18-521, item 2557, average price 80-100€, comes with smoke generator

Brawa electric locomotive B-B class Ae477, item 63011, average price 100-160€ (quite rare), used in musem trains

Rivarossi steam locomotive "chapelon" SNCF in brown color, average price 80-160€ (hard to get a good one as old and rare),

Fulgurex steam locomotive "chapelon" SNCF in brown color, price ++300€, made in brass

Otherwise other locos were used pulling the wagons as Ae 6/6 (B-B-B) , Ae 4/7 (1-D-2), SNCF BB electric (B-B)... The train went throw several countries throw the years 1883-1914, 1919-1939, 1945-2005, 2007-2009. Depending on which route (simplon, viena, ostense..) different locomotives match.

Another question regarding the Kato Orient Express. What is the difference between the Kato 23215 15 car set and the 1230/1231 8 and 7 car sets? The 23215 seems to be much more expensive. Any input would be appreciated.

Strictly speaking, there is no difference between the models themselves.  The 23215 set is sold as a single box set under the Kato/LEMKE brand and is intended for sale outside of Asia, eg European Market.

Kato sets 10-1230+10-1231 are licensed for sale within Asia only.

The Kato/LEMKE box set is a kind of greyish/blue colour, rather than the deep blue of the Japan/Asia Kato release.

u can use br17 too

I don't think it was possible that a br17 pulled the orient express in the same consist that went to Japan and was modelled by Kato.

Wikipedia entry for the br17 locomotives:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussian_S_10

The orient express in this consist was running in 1988 and afaik there were no operating prussian S10-s (br17-s) around that time. The last operational locomotive of this class was retired in 1964.

While earlier consits may have been pulled by an S10, they looked quite differnt. Afaik the only surviving example of the original coach types can be found in Hungary in the Railway Historical Park's roundhouse.

More expensive indeed!  It is reviewed in the latest issue of Continental Modeller with a price in the U.K. of 480 pounds, in other words $871 Australian or 84,864 Yen, that's 53,397 (AUD$548) more than the 1230/1231 sets from Hobby Search. :confused2:
