Back in Japan Again

Recommended Posts

Travelled from Kokura to Kumamoto this morning then continued on to Kagoshima Chuo to do some tram riding after we left our bags at the hotel.  When we got back to Kumamoto a group of us went for an evening ride to Misumi to finish the days train riding.

Kumamoto Electric Railway rivals Choshi for a line where time stood still.  You even got the mule (#71)!

KiHa 67's right? I still love that JNR paint scheme.

Yes, there seemed to be at least two sets working Seaside Liner services painted in the scheme.

West, did you get a look at the Kawasaki bogies on that ex-Toei 6000 series?  I've seen a few pics, they're these: http://www.khi.co.jp/english/rs/news/detail/20131114_1e.html

No, I didn't get a good look, I only saw it from the platform. It seemed to ride a bit better than the other car in the set that still had the old bogies.  We assumed the railway was getting new bogies in exchange for Kawasaki testing and advertising them.

Wow it looks like you're having a great vacation!

I can't believe how clean everything is and I'm glad I don't drive in an area where there are Trams.....I probably wouldn't know where to drive when a tram came except out of the way :)

Hello Mr westfalen,

Please allow me to ask:

1. What service did you take from Hakata to Nagasaki and return?  Did you enjoy those services?  The reason I ask is because 787 is probably my favourite consist to ride, especially the Green Car.

2. Did you have time to try and buy any of the fine desserts for sale at Nagasaki Station?  It is well-known that Nagasaki Station offers some of the finest desserts.  My wife can spend hours there buying all sorts of sweet desserts.

1. We travelled from Shin-Tosu to Nagasaki and Nagasaki to Hakata by 885 White Sonic.  My honest opinion of the 885 is that it is not the best train to ride in, the windows are too small to see much unless you have a window seat or to see things out the opposite side from where you're sitting, the large fixed arm rests between the seats give you less room and the ride was very rough at times, I think they sacrifice ride quality for speed. Give me an old 485 any day.

2. I didn't try any of the desserts. I'm trying to stick to a diet but it's hard in Japan.

That is a surprise to hear about the White Sonic 885....I thought one of the reasons for the "tilt trains" was a smoother ride.

DIET.....you're on vacation, diet is when you comeback :)

Nice West! How was Japan's slowest Shinkansen? Lovely display of models in the train! I bet they're stuck to the bases if not they're be bouncing around when the train moves.

It was a bit crowded at times with one lot of seats removed to make way for the model train display but a group of 22 Australians didn't help much.  The trains did appear to be stuck to the track but I couldn't see how.  Included in the case were a Tenshodo C58 and C11, a rough calculation I made wouldn't give much change out of $10,000 for the trains in the case.

What's that station with the JR Shikoku 2000 series next to the Tosa Kuroshio railcar?

Nakamura.
