Ami Ami has just updated their sales page again!

http://slist.amiami.com/top/search/list?s_cate2=9604&s_saleitem=1&pagemax=40&inctxt2=12

Couple of nice stuffs in there, like Kato E233-3000, E7 & W7 at around 32% off (it's 32 % off retail price + 8% tax, so technically it's around 26% off, u get the maths), Tomix E231-1000 Takasaki line 5-car set, Tomix 92286 100 series at 39%, 455 series Green Liner at 36%, Hankyu 6300, Kato V2, V12, V13, V14, locomotives, Kato figures, vehicles etc...

Of very special interest is the Tomix 98918 Kiha-183 Asahiyama Zoo train at 40% off and a Kato HO scale E5 basic 4-car set at 41% off!

Quite an interesting sale if you ask me... But very bad timing for me... So i'm sharing this so that interested parties can quickly buy them off so they become out of stock so I feel less tempted to buy ~   :)

Hahah... that's a smart way to remove the temptation.. I guess I willl try to apply this method...

Yeah, Kato E7 /  W7 set is so tempting at that low price, but I have already got one at higher price... why good news always comes late? LoL..

Unfortunately, you cannot select unregistered SAL for orders exceeding 8000 JPY anymore.

"Important Notice Regarding Unregistered SAL Shipment(updated May 14, 2015)

Dear Valued Customers,

Thank you for your continued patronage of AmiAmi. Unfortunately due to increasing trouble with Unregistered SAL shipments, our store is currently in a position where we have no choice but to restrict Unregistered SAL shipments to orders under 8000 JPY in value. Unregistered SAL is no longer selectable when an order’s merchandise total exceeds 8000 JPY. Ineligible orders will be automatically updated to Registered SAL or Air Small Packet shipment. While we understand that this may cause an inconvenience to our customers who prefer Unregistered SAL, we kindly ask for your understanding and cooperation." ( http://www.amiami.com/ )

Maybe, but registered SAL shipping is unavailable to some countries, e.g., Australia and Germany. And the available alternatives will cost almost the same as EMS if I remember correctly.

Link to comment

Yeah and you have to sign for the package with registered Sal, which at times has gotten shippments here caught up in a loop of where is the package when you are not there to sign for it and you go into the post to get it and the carrier has taken it back out to try again or they just can't find it. Had this happen in a Few permutations, but packages always come out, they may just take a number of days and a trip or three to the post to get home. But same goes for Ems. Also happens with some of the China post packages I get with 99 cent parts and I feel so bad that the mailman has come to the door for a signature for such a tiny part!

Still batting 1000 on all the posts from japan over the last 15 odd years!

Guess the hype for the H5 isn't as big as the E5... There seems to be much lesser demand for this than the E5... Of course the limited edition 10-car set is another story...

Link to comment

No hype to be had.  Not a new train. Yawn. Livery almost the same as E5. Yawn.  Hokkaido. Yawn.  Train not running yet.  Yawn.  Manufacturers and retailers probably jumped the gun on this one.

The fact that it runs in Hokkaido makes the H5 more interesting to me than it would be otherwise.  I agree with all your other points though.

Still, at least the H5 livery isn't as similar to the E5 as the W7 is to the E7.

Agreed...

Hang on, is there a difference in the W7 and the E7 actually?  :P

The logo on the H5 appeals to me more and more... It is actually the shape of Hokkaido island itself!

I just checked ami ami & i think they went crazy today!

Stuff were being listed at 93% off! Like 970yen for a 5-car set with motor!!!

Dun know if they were real & stuff were really being sold at those prices, or just a trick ami ami pulled to show others?

Anyhow i would say yes anytime to a 5car set with motor below 1000yen!

Unbelivable!

Interesting... I checked through the sale list around 12 hours ago or so, and those items at 94% discount were already sold out at that time, although the discounts were more in the 30-40% range at the time. Looks like they have only put the wild discounts on the items that are already gone.

Link to comment

It's just a bug. AmiAmi increase the discount every few weeks and just before this happens, the status of all concerned products changes temporarily to "Sold Out". The 93/94% bug was new, though.

Yes I would guess it was a bug or perhaps intentional to get more interest on the sale items, so people can buy them off much quicker for fear of getting sold out.

I'm still not believing those items were sold at those prices, especially the sets. Unbelievable... If they did get sold at those prices, the buyers would be feeling like striking a lottery!  :)

I'm waiting for a Kato Odakyu Romance Car set to arrive at AmiAmi (supposedly over the next 11 days - one day per car ;-)  While checking the status of it I noticed a small item on the site that interested me.  I asked them if I could add in stock items to the order after they invoiced me for it.

Their response was, "Yes, you will be able to combine this order with in stock items."

This surprises me, as their published policy is very much in line with HS.

As mentioned previously, AmiAmi seems to often have the best prices on train sets (19700 JPY for this, 29% off).  I see being able to add in stock items to pre-orders / reserved items at shipping time as a major benefit.  If the delivery date slips, I just have more time to decide what else I want.

Link to comment

Indeed. I was worried about the customer support Ami Ami would give and is surprised to see that they actually will respond to your personal request if it can be done on their side.

Though their prices are often listed at 29-30% off, they did add in the taxes of 8% which I don't understand why we need to pay as exports... But anyhow it is still slightly more than 20% off so their prices are still good. Plus they do have a point system like HS that can be used to offset purchases..

Link to comment

The export tax is a bit to get out of apparently and the store in these situations has to pay the tax then go for a refund of it at the end of the year (unless one of the registered places that can exempt you on the spot, but I think that may not work for export) so it can make a difference if they are selling on a low margin and then the but extra work to do export as well to pay the tax for you and get it refunded later... Can be hard on the cash flow which is killer in small businesses.

Based on JR 500's message, I asked them if they add taxes for foreign orders, and got this response

"We do not add any taxes to orders."

Perhaps they make an exception for Sillypore.

There are tax regions based on international contracts. The EU is one big region, so you pay local taxes for purchases from other EU countries. Interregional purchases are not taxed in the exporting country, but taxed by the importing one. In case Japan is in the same tax region as another country, then they have to add local taxes, but in exchange, there is no import tax or any import duty. There is a similar agreement around the British commonwealth and another one in north America. Moving cargo from Australia or British Coumbia to the UK, rebranding it as british (this is actually illegal) and selling it in the EU as a local product is also a common trick to avoid paying import duty. This is how we get good and cheap canadian lentil or not so great but dirt cheap chinese garlic in the EU with a made in EU tag.

Haha ~ That's so strange. Based on a simple analysis on their listing price, taking a recently released set the Hakucho 92578:

At Ami Ami:

http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=RAIL-19410&page=top

Listed Price is 18,144 before discount , which is 8% more than 16,800 which is the original Tomix listed price.

This 8% would be the taxes applied of 8%.

Sale price is about 29% from listed price of 18,144 = 12,800yen

At HS:

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10320921

Listed Price is 16,800 before discount, which is the same price as original Tomix listed

Sale price is about 10% at 15,120yen

At Loco1:

http://www.loco1hobby.net/en/emu-limited-express-express/1238-tomix-92578.html?search_query=92578&results=1

Listed Price is 16,800 before discount, which is the same price as original Tomix listed

Sale price is about 20% at 13,440yen

Perhaps my browser using Sillypore address could only view this from Ami Ami?  :P
