The creator of this web site is a member of the Japanese Railway Society and has traveled to Japan in 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008.  Photos are organized by JR, Shinkansen, private railways, urban (trams and subways), downloads (nice, big  ;D  ;D) and he has two Japanese layouts in N gauge. He seems to have railway contacts because he has taken photos inside depots.  There are logs of his travels and 2000 is exceptionally detailed.  There are charts for Hiragana and Katakana so you can learn a little symbol language.

I would have posted this about two weeks ago, but the frames act really strange. If you use Internet Explorer it looks this web site will open properly, if not you may have individual frames opening in different windows--which is what happens to me in Firefox.
