Sorry for the random question here, but do any makers release trains with doors that open?

Sorry for the random question here, but do any makers release trains with doors that open?

Yes, but there are very few of them in N scale and i only know of german prototypes. (both dcc remote controlled and manual types) In larger scales, like 0 or 1, this feature is more common, even among japanese prototype trains.

On the other hand, if you buy kits (Greenmax makes lots of them), you can cut the doors out and assemble them in an open position or even some types as movable, but this is considered modding or scratch building. The best types for movable ones are the outside suspension (some old dmu-s had these) and slide behind the wall types (most cargo doors and a few modified passener sets). Door pocket types (the most common) are hard to make movable as the minimal thickness required for the common plastics prevents the door pockets to be built between the outer and inner car walls. Statically open doors are usually not supplied in kits as once installed, the train esentially becomes a diorama object. Some 3rd party etched parts are available though for diorama builders.

ps: Kato made an N scale bus series that come with two sets of doors, one open and one closed, so you can install the one you prefer.

About four years ago I made this video from a chap at the JAM who did some opening and closing doors and then some in HO-scale:

the plastic wall would be too thick for normal inward sliding doors..

i think it's doable with brass models.

I often find Greenmax catalogue very much different from the rest of the makers... they don't make catalogue yearly (the last one being 2014 I think) hence the catalogue will be much updated from the previous copy. That article on the coreless motor will be very useful indeed!

Is this the first time a model has been used for the photo on marketing material?

Very bizarre painting on the rails . . .

Very bizarre painting on the rails . . .

This happens when the paint starts to flake after some form of oxidation and vibration caused by heavy use. Pretty typical of unmaintiained store and exhibition layouts and much better than the greenish oxidation that could even come through the paint.

Oh that Kintetsu 16600 in the new painting! That is mighty INTERESTING....

That Shirayuki is nice too, but having already the E653-1000 Inaho in my fleet I guess this is passable... That Odakyu 8000 is whispering to my ears oh so gently too...

Ouch the KiHa 75s are far from cheap at ¥19,800 for a 3 car train compared to last year when I picked up a 4 car set from AmiAmi for ¥13,030, okay it may have included a healthy discount when I purchased it but I dare say it would still be a lot cheaper than what's on offer now.

Nice. Maybe I should grab a bunch of those retaining walls. Walls always come in handy.
