What's in Your Roster?

maybe... but I started my collection more that 10 years ago so I think that's normal

you aren't so far away with Shinkansen roster but you need more locos (till now around 300....)

Haha crap.. Ok I'll work on that LOL.

Ooh I dunno.. The very first set that I bought was the Kato TGV 6 car set in 1995, and then the Tomix 300 series Shinkansen shortly after that in the same year. I even just found the receipt for the Kato TGV. $120 from World of Trains in Brooklyn (I think I ordered it off the Railroad Craftsmen magazine add LOL). It's so old the receipt used those carbon copy machines and my dad's credit card number is only 13 digits long hahaha. I still have both of those sets, and as of yesterday, I finally have the last 4 pieces of the 300 series (was missing the 4 326-500 cars), so that set took me 18 years.. Yes 18 years to complete. Although I think my collection really took off in the past 6 years or so.

I've also resigned myself to the fact that I am a collector, and will likely never have a real layout.

It's off-topic, and you are probably already doing so, but those Kato or Tomix double track sets for fast temporary layouts look pretty awesome to me.

Yeah I've got 1 semi-completed 4x2' module with grass and a canal and that's it.. My current temporary setup consists of 2 x 4x2' modules, 1 8 x 2', and 4 corner pieces. It's enough room to do a inside/outside loop (i.e. train goes in the outside loop then switches to the inside loop). Plus I can run 16 car consists without it looking weird. And most of track consists of Kato double track either at ground level or viaduct. Again the only exception being the semi-completed module which uses flex track.

While I like the Kato and Tomix track, I just hate how every turn is the same, and almost 45 degrees. I like flex track way more. My goal has always been to make a layout where I can have realy gentle sweeping curves for my Shinkansen. Maybe when I retire..

we need PICTURES to go with this thread!  if i have an extra hour to waste today,  il take out all my train sets, remove at least one car from each for a mega photoshoot and roster.

Hi Subway!

I know what you meant. Is it something like this? Had some fun recently taking group shots.. Although i forgot to take out one more of my train for the group shot which is the MicroAce 5933 Kiha-40 'Fox-Squid-Crab' set...

*PS. The more i look at my group shot and layout, the more i feel the 800 feeling out of place. Anyone getting the same feeling? I'm seriously considering letting go the 800 series as ii'm really feeling it out of place....*

I sort of know what you mean, but the 800 series feels out of place anywhere. It just doesn't look like most other Shinkansen. In Hakata it meets up with all other JR West Shinkansen: currently only the 700 and N700 series and on the Kyushu Shinkansen it is being used with a sub-series of the N700. So prototypically it's quite correct with the 300 and 700 series you have.

Link to comment

Hhmmm.. Yes Densha. I guess the 800 is truely had to fit in, and only the 300, 500 and 700 would most probably meet the 800 i have at Hakata station... But i guess it will never meet the E3 and E4, right? Also, i'm more in tune into JR East where the E3, E4 and also the Tohoku shinkansen with their E5 and E2...

Having said that, guessing my 800 is going to the 'sell/ trade' section soon? But again, feeling very attached to it as it is the FIRST train i have in N scale that utimately pushes me over to N scale and all... You know, my first Lego set i wouldn't wanna let go too... Dilema...

Link to comment

Whoops, forgot the 500 series indeed. I always forget that one. Nope, the JR East Shinkansen only go as south as Tokyo, and the 800 series only as north as Hakata, so that's not even close. JR East is very colorful and has that design thing, but JR Central/West/Kyushu is more moderate in terms of the outside appearance. Personally I don't know what I would choose because I like both, but I'd probably end up with the Shinkansen south of Tokyo.

One fact: running JR East Shinkansen alongside JR Central/West/Kyushu isn't prototypical anyway, they only terminate side by side at Tokyo. (if I'm correct)

dont sell it...i have a few sets i dont care for as much anymore.  but id rather just relegate them to the display category instead of selling.

didnt have time yesterday maybe find some time today..

Well, I'll just log the Japanese trains for now....i just recently re-inventoried my US locomotives and the list is far too lengthy to put on here (unless i were to limit it to either road names, or types and skipped the road names as i have several roads to various types....)

MicroAce A-0317 Farewell Doraemon

Kato Nozomi 500 (seems to be a very popular train here!)-full 16 cars

Kato Nozomi 700- full 16 cars

Kato Nozomi 800- fill 7 cars

Kato E-1 Max - 8 cars (Should i get another 4-car add-on or would 8 do?)

Kato E-4 Max - full 8 car set

Kato E-5  - full 10 car set

Kato E-6 - Full 7 car set

Kato  Dr Yellow- full set

Made a few changes to my roster as the recent 'Sayonara 800 series'. No it's not a new set, just that sadly the 800 series was eventually sold off as it was really out of place....

Hi John K! Well i think the E1 Max looks good enough as a 8-car train, but if you are going for full consists, which i think you are based on your current consists, it would be good to get the last Add-on for the E1. Good collection of shinkansens! I've always wanted to run 16-car consists but if i run it on my current layout, i believe the train would just clear the station fully and 3 seconds later the head starts coming back in.... Yes the 500 series is a very popular shinkansen, probably because of it's design and shape. It's almost written 'shinkansen' for me~

Thanks JR 500.....i dont reallyu have a theme for my Japanese trains like most of you guys do (I dont know enough right now)...i just get what has eye appeal for me....and in truth, i run them at shows because kids love to watch them (You got them when a little girl is chasing your E6 all the way around the layout because she likes how the silver/grey/red looks....and it's FAST....)

Added some new trains and sold off some trains that didn't fit into the region intended for my layout. *Updated list on page 3 of this thread*

Learnt an important lesson also; When buying trains, one cannot buy trains just because they look very nice or they are cheap.. cause if one is building a layout and having an intended region, some trains look too out-of-place for the layout... Yet my wife was asking me: "Who cares? What's the difference?"

Sure you can, the only rules in playing with trains is the ones you make for yourself. Rules others make don't apply to you, only them!

Yeah, you can pretty easily make up some fake-ass backstory. Maybe there's a rolling stock plant on your RR and they do testing there. Maybe your railway is some private job that buys everything used. Using that logic you can even change gauges - my Iga Railway 860's were originally gauged at 1435mm when they ran on Kintetsu but were regauged to 1067mm.

You can also posit alternate histories. For instance, WWII railway mergers put Keihan and Hankyu under common ownership and did the same with Kintetsu and Nankai. But you can just as easily posit that there was a Nankai-Hankyu and a Keihan-Kintetsu merger. In the alternate history where Keihan and Kintetsu merged, the Shin-Keihan line never gets transferred to Hankyu control, and given Kintetsu's early flirtations with quasi-high speed services (e.g. the 10100's were designed to operate at 170km/h) that line eventually becomes de facto HSR. You can also operate Keihan stock to Nara or Nagoya - there was a connection at Tanbabashi back in the day - which makes it entirely "prototypical" for me to have Aichi Loop 2000's parked across the same platform from a Keihan 8000 series.

You can also just enjoy your trains. Jeff

True that.

Personally, I like to envisage the existence of a "Mudkipu Densha Tetsudo Yugen-Gaisha" which also operates suburban buses, beachfront resorts, a department store and a crappy amusement park.

Link to comment

Yes.. The amusement park will be nice to watch! I have the Lego Ferris wheel, which i especially kept in hopes of fitting it into my town, since it's the right scale for Takahashi Town - right scale as in almost 'London Eye' size for it ~~

@ Jeff - Thanks! My wife becomes even wiser near the Jewellery shop ~

Now that i'm viewing my roster, i'm thinking of buying even more trains! I'm intending to place all the available trains i have on the layout, so i'll most probably for a hopefully 4-line yard for that... Due to that, i can't have that rural line i was planning on to run my trams on... Hence the recent sale of the Kirara... The 313 Series was also out of region, and i needed the funds to get that E231-1000 (which i already bought) so that it fits beautifully into the layout region...

This is basically all my powered trains and 2 trailer ones that aren't powered. (The Keikyu 1000 and 115.)

I forgot to put my DD51 in the first picture so I took that last one a while ago. And I decided against a picture of my freight cars and passenger carriages.
