The first train has arrived at the newly opened Niihama-jō request stop station. Almost complete apart from waiting for a delivery of platform seats. And a few tourists to admire the Castle (and its snow fence given this is Hokkaido...) :)

Yes we should start a thread for those cursed projects! I had food carts almost all completed and was working on the big wheels when tomytec released theirs. Really took the wind out of my sales to finish them. Someday now that it's been long enough and I get a little time I need to pull them out and finish them! Just hurt... I know scratch built is nicer and cooler just was fiddling with it findingnthenbuts to make everything over a few months to have something very unique only to have it Tomyteced!

Investment in a new DE10 from Tomix to help out some of Niihama's more ageing diesels has taken place but the locals are amazed how noisy it is compared to its Kato equivalent. They are hoping will quieten down a bit as it runs in hauling mixed freights.

I've got to admit Tomix locos are a bit hit-and-miss, I've got a brand new EF66 and DD51 which are iffy at best (noisy and prone to stuttering) but a new EF60 acquired at rock-bottom price is a beautiful runner, and a DD54  which must be 20+ years old, not the best in terms of detail but runs fine.

Hmm.. My Tomix EF66 and 3 DD51's are just fine really. Apart from 1 of them, but that's because the decoder in it is busted ;)

Umm yeah... let me just retract that... I've just dug the two offending locos out after many months of inactivity and they are running OK. I wonder if they need to "age" a bit like wine or something. Actually I'm getting mildly bemused here, I have a couple of trains (not just Tomix) which were not running at all well, but have suddenly recovered; I wonder if they're affected by climatic factors, but that's a topic for another thread.

A couple of up to date photographs of Niihama thanks to a visit from my daughter with her camera with a wide angle lens.

 

My recent trip to Japan resulted in bringing back another DD51 for Niihama depot, an early Tomix version, bringing the total stud to six running plus one dismantled. This was caused by my spending a day in Yokkachi, chasing after DD51 at work on the Kansai Line, bringing about an urge to further feed my addiction...

A few pictures around Niihama based on trying to capture the inhabitents eye view. Also spotted that developers have moved in whilst I have been away and turned what was an old tea field into a building site! Niihama-jo platform seems to have a touch of subsidence, must have been an earthquake...

No you sent them to sit in the corner (err well boxes) until they would behave better! Makes perfect sense!

The people of Niihama were amazed to see that after all there was a Temple behind their Torii gate...albeit a wooden, scratch built, free style one but their local priest has already moved in and even a backpacker has turned up for a tour.

After a spring clean, some refurbishment, track repair, scenic updates and a move around of buildings, Niihama moves into its 8th year of operation... :)

Addition of a low bridge clearance barrier and sign to reduce the number of decapitated trucks in Niihama.

Niihama is now becoming more of a care and maintenance layout for running sessions rather than for any new modelling.

Mainly because I have a new project underway now at "build the baseboard" level, that will be a substantial diorama although not N gauge, Japan or even trains...

 

I'll add details to Platform 7 Other Hobbies... when it gets a bit more adavnced.

Been spending time sorting out the various track glitches and loco problems that come with an aging layout resulting in the running on Niihama now being the best its been for years. One of the side benefits from now having more spare time due to deciding to give up being a wage slave and to work for myself...

Had a recent trip to Japan (mainly Sanyo Mainline - Hiroshima to/from Kyoto - with a side trip up to Yokkaichi & Inazawa) that has reinspired my modelling (mainly due to a quick trip to a modelling shop giving me some more details to add plus laser cut card kits) so I am doing a few updates to Niihama that I will share in the near future.

 

As an aside, does anyone know if an N gauge HD300 is planned to be released by either Kato or Tomix?

Revised Niihama freight terminal layout based closer to actual practice seen in terminals seen in Japan over the years, in particular Higashi-Fukuyama and Tashiro.
