Here are some pictures of the inside of the Kato Portram.  There are 22 more on my gallery showing the disassembly process.  Be careful the gears are tiny.  Questions welcome.

I love to disassemble my trains, but I don't own this model. Kudos to you for being brave enough to do this AND for photographing the process!

FFISKIV - Great photos and thanks for posting them! Now the next question....how hard was it to re-assemble the Portram and is there anything that in particular is very tricky to deal with?

Bernard - The most difficult part is re joining the front and rear units. you must maintain alignment of the front and rear trucks while inserting the steering linkage all the while keeping the swivel point pieces aligned and ready to go together.  The trick is to push the plastic plate (the 1 the flat copper contacts go thru) forward enough to allow play in the pivot assembly.  I managed to not photograph this part as I ran out of hands.
