The Japanese wikipedia says they'll expand it up to 12 cars when there are a lot of passengers. I didn't know they were so flexible with consists.

That's good news! The 400 series is a bullet train most often left out as it bears uncanning resemblance to the E3 Tsubasa counterpart...

This news made me regret buying the KATO E3 Komachi... As i understand for connectivity, Tomix cant connect to Kato train hence all trains to be coupled together will have to be in Kato too for me... Such as E2, E4, E3, 200 and the 400... To make things worse i havent seen 400 made by Kato and the E2 and E4 are VERY expensive for the Kato, as compared to it's Tomix counterparts...

And I think (but am not entirely sure) that the Kato 200 series can't be coupled to other Shinkansen series. I've seen pictures of a 200 series and 400 series coupled together, a very nice combination of both old and new Shinkansen series.

Densha nice train in the Sig one of my favourite,

I think the Tomix 200 can be coupled, one due this month.

Only some series 200`s had the nose coupler K sets i beleive.

Im pretty sure the earlier pointy nose certinly did not. I think kato is based on the older sets

???

The E4 costs the same and the Kato E2 is a bit cheaper than the Tomix E2.

And yes they can be coupled!

Watch this very hyped video, previously posted before. Notice at 2:33 when the 200 series zoom past... And guess who's following behind!

I'm guessing both of Kato, since i have yet to see a Tomix 200 series being released... Or am i missing something here?

@JR500

Considering the typical Tomix diaphragms I'm sure ones in my post are Tomix models. The video you posted is too blurry to see it, and I don't see a 400 series but a 200+E3 Komachi at 2:33.

Ahah! Now i see what you meant Densha... Guess we were on the wrong frequency~~

I was thinking 200 + E3, as i think that is the correct configration in real life too... I'm not sure if there was an actual 200 + 400 ? 400 + E4 i'm sure there is, and E3 Tusbasa+ E4 Max and E3 Komachi + E2 Hayate are certain.. Thus i would need in my case all Kato models to connect to my Kato E3 Komachi, so that i can even make an incorrect configration run.

As I posted three posts back, you can see a 200+400 in this video:

(I wonder why the shortened youtube links show smaller video)

Ooppss sorry my bad Densha.. Didnt watch the video to the end to see the beautiful coupling process of the 200 + 400! Intersting combination indeed!

Hi Darklighter:

Haven't really gone into detailed calculations for them, hence allow me to make some computations here for comparison of the Kato and Tomix E2 + E3 Komachi and the E4 + E3 Tusbasa:

On Hobbysearch:

KATO

[Limited Edition] Series E2 Tohoku Shinkansen `Hayate` Full Restoration 1st Train (10-Car Set) (Model Train) come with nose coupler to couple with E3 Komachi = 21,6000 yen   http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10170384

10-278 Kato E2 Hayate Basic 4-car set (11,700yen) + 10-279 Kato E2 Hayate Add-on 6-car set (9180yen) =  20,880yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10060220                                http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10047009

10-221 Kato E3 Komachi 6-car set = 15,300yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10060220

Taking the cheapest option for comparison = 20,880 + 15,300

KATO's total for E2 Hayate + E3 Komachi combination = 36,180yen

TOMIX

92360 Tomix E2 Hayate Basic 3-car set = 8910yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10112109

92361 Tomix E2 Hayate Add-on 4-car set A = 8280yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10112110

92362 Tomix E2 Hayate Add-on 3-car Set B = 5580yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10112111

Total for Tomix E2 Hayate = 22,770yen

92803 Tomix E3 Komachi 6-car set = 17,820yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10097853

TOMIX's total for E2 Hayate + E3 Komachi combination = 40,590yen

Darklighter, you are RIGHT! Kato IS Cheaper!

KATO

10-292 Kato E4 MAX Basic 4-car set = 11,250yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10049308

10-293 Kato E4 Max Add-On 4-car set = 7650yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10049309

10-222 Kato E3 Tsubasa 7-car set = 16,470yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10081531

KATO's total for E4 MAX + E3 Tusbasa combination = 35,370yen

TOMIX

92765 Tomix E4 MAX Basic 3-car set = 8640yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10044639

92766 Tomix E4 MAX Add-on 3-car set A = 6750yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10044640

92767 Tomix E4 MAX Add-on 2-car set B = 3510yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10044641

92804 Tomix E3 Tsubasa 7-car set = 19,620yen

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10097854

TOMIX's total for E4 MAX + E3 Tusbasa combination = 38,520yen

Kato's combination is STILL Chaper!

Interesting exercise and good to know ~

And can be even cheaper if you buy at other shops than HS. :)

Does the Tomix accept LED interior lighting and drop in DCC Decoders?

Led yes but not DCC. However its only use full if you are doing digitrax DCC or don't care on brand of decoder.

Ie there are may different patented DCC function the kato/digitrax won't do that another brands might.

Would be nice to see nem decoders sockets most DCC companies have a nem decoder series.

I'm digitrax myself still there's many out there who are not.

Kato keep their price down by making their own form factor.

So does that mean some one gets royalties from manufacturers who use NEM?

Hello Mr JR500,

Remember also that most retailers are cheaper than HS.  HS charge a premium for foreign customer.

I suspect it's more that Kato wanted to hide the decoders, and even the NEM651 would add bulk that makes sandwiching the decoder inside the limited space between the floor and the underfloor difficult.

Also keep in mind that Kato introduced this form-factor a number of years ago, and decoders have gotten smaller since then. You might be able to fit a NEM-equipped 11mm decoder under the floor today, but an 18-25mm decoder would have been more problematic.

But I agree that it would be nice to have choice, and a socket for a plug-in decoder.

Hello Mr Keitaro,

Kato decoders are economical because of the limited features.  For example, 29-351 EM13 is the decoder for use in the motor car of the EMU, yet it does not have function for in-car lighting.  As such, two decoders are required in the one car for DCC motor and lighting control.  The same is true in cab cars with FL12 decoders.

Also, Kato decoders are compatible with Digitrax system.

I think many brand of decoder will fit within the Kato decoder space.

Nobody makes drop-in replacements for Kato's decoders, not even NGDCC.  You could probably fit a small decoder in the EM13 space and wire it in, if you really needed some capability the EM13 lacked.  For all its small size, though, the EM13 is surprisingly well-equipped with features. The only thing I can think of it lacking is RailComm, since it's made by Digitrax and they don't like RailComm.

Nothing I know of would fit in the slot for the cab decoder (it's tiny), and the interior light decoder is basically replacing the lightboard (as I understand from photos; I've never owned any of those decoders) and so you can't simply replace it, although you could wire a small decoder to the lightboard, and tape it to the car floor, where it would be inconspicuous (but still visible).

Awwwjeez. I guess Tomix is reverting back to doing terrible 80s liveries. The 169 Series 'Kamoshika' 'Misuzu' livery does not speak to the imagination, but rather harkens back to the early days of the JR era, full of strange and uninteresting liveries.

Seriously, what is this thing:

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10222623

A bus turntable? Why'd you need that? A bus is able to turn itself.

Its for end to end operation so you can have a road follow the line

And turn around and go back.

Its very clever kind of like a dc auto reverser but for buses.

You need alot of space to make a loop at each end so this saves you space.
