Two thatched roof huts burn down next to parking lot of World Heritage Town Shirakawa-Go

It's directly next to the parking lot opposite of the gift shop, just a few hundred meters from the main entrance of the museum part of the village. The fire was quickly contained and nobody was injured, but it was a close shave.

They have quite an impressive sprinkler system (a video is included in the soranews link).

The sprinkler system seemed to work well! Amazing as those houses are built like a large bonfire pile.

 

loved the no smoking sign in the bus with the flaming building just outside.

That sprinkler system needs to be employed in some of the wildfire prone areas in other towns around the world.
