Shuri Castle in Naha, Okinawa burns down to the ground

It was a reconstruction from the 1990's, it was completely destroyed during WW2. Hopefully they will rebuild it again.

 

To moderators: since there is no "general" japan news section, I placed it here, if you think it fits better somewhere else then by all means.

Sad news.  I have fond memories of visiting the castle on shore leave when I worked in Japan.  They had done an amazing job recreating the place, every room felt authentic.  Parts were still under reconstruction too (as of 2015, when I was last there).

It's up to 368M yen now. Crowdfunding is until March 2020. I wonder how much money they are able to raise.

I see that the firm 'Woody Joe' is offering a 1:160 scale kit of Shuri Castle, all in timber. The shots of the completed model are very impressive, in its vermillion red finish.
