Toei Oedo Line - New (?) rolling stock.

Recommended Posts

A new formation for the Toei Oedo line entered service last month, 12-691F, built by Kawasaki heavy industries.

While technically part of the 12-600 series (itself part of the broader 12-000 series family), it fetaures numerous improvements compared to it's 5/6 years older predecessors, such as new IGBT-VVVF inverters with SiC elements, new LED destination indicators, but more importantly, a new headlight design (LEDs here too), and a new liviery wich makes them look similar to Lyon's Metro MPL85 stock.

It's unknown if there are more sets planned.

The Toei Oedo line (also known as Line No.12) runs several different batches of 12-000 series stock.

The first and second batches were introduced between 1991 (when the line started operation, on the Higarigaoka to Nerima section) and 1994, and were retired by 2016.

The third and fourth batches were introduced between 1997 (opening of the Nerima to Shinjuku section) and 2001 (opening of the whole line). They're still operational.

The fifth and sixth batches, are considered a separated series (the 12-600 series), and were introduced in 2012 to increase frequency on the line and replace the first and second batch 12-000 series stock.

The Toei Oedo line might be extended north, toward Niiza for the 2020 olympics (as the shooting range is planned to be built there), but as of today, no decision has been made.

That is a somewhat optimistic "might", bearing in mind the Olympics are only 18 months away.

The latest info I can find on any planning of that kind is from the start of 2018, which is an expression of desire on the part of Niiza city and other interested parties that Tokyo and Saitama might like to pretty please build us an extension.

Considering the tunnel depth there is pretty much cut and cover under a major road and there are surface area provisions for at most half a stop only, it could imho take several years to get a plan approved, the route plots purchased and houses demolished and then the construction could only began after that. And it would still not reach Niiza for another 2 or 3 stops.

This plan seems to be ongoing for some years to reach the JR Musashino line station in Niiza and some land puchases were already planned. Imho it's still in the wishlist stage though.
