Why bother finishing the layout, just plunk construction equipment everywhere and have it a big under construction zone. Saves a lot on scenery and you can collect all those different construction vehicles.

jeff

I ve got that much unfinished on my layout I reckon it ll be cheaper to finish it off than buy the construction stuff ha ha😂😂😂

Finally put together the Tomytec "Under construction" modules. The wooden frame house is excellent. A bit disappointing that the two steel framed buildings are exactly the same. Eventually I may take them apart to try to kitbash into a bigger building under construction.

They are of a modular design so I think they can be combined together to make a huge building under construction... Also, the wall panels can be fitted as your like so there is some more variety there... I love how there are holes on the slabs for the staircase that is under construction!

From what I remember the studio mid is all modular and larger spans than the Tomytec. I think I remember where I have a studio mid all cut up and ready to play with. I was thinking of enlarging mine. I got mine on hs sale and glad I did as there is not a lot to the framework kit. You could easily roll your own with some evergreen H and I beam stock and some flat strip stock.

Just received this tower crane. It's a 3d printed (I think, not sure) kit that Pauljag told me about. I may try to switch out the cab. I have a half-baked notion of using the cab from the tiny blue Viking excavator, and grafting it onto this. We'll see. I have a few projects ahead of this, but I'll post pics when I get round to it.

Some more stuff. Tomytec "Construction Truck" and "Construction Hut". Also, some Graham Farish figures. One is called "Engineers" and the other is called "Workers", though both are a mix of boss guys and worker guys. I don't think I've ever seen a Civil Engineer operate a pneumatic drill.

Haha those are pretty nice, especially the workers! Definitely looking better over the Tomytec ones as they have no equipment and are simply standing around with their arms open or walking around looking pretty sneaky…

Here are some 3D printed cranes and construction vehicles at Shapeways. I only chose those that I believe have relevance to use in Japan. There are probably more that I didn't find. There is more construction equipment, but they were very American style.

Wow those look great! Thanks for sharing Hayashi! If only they come painted, being a noob in painting... My painting will probably ruin the beautiful model...

@gavino200 Sorry to ask so late, but where are those wheel loaders from? Looks great!

No problem, Martin. Can you tell me exactly which item you're talking about. I'm not very savvy with the correct terms for these things.

Thanks Hayashi. Lot's of great vehicles. I've only used used Shapeways once for vehicles - a couple of police armored cars. They were tricky but fun to paint. The surface was a bit rough but acceptable. My biggest peeve was that I couldn't work out a way of adding "glass" to the windows.

Do you have any of these items yourself? Any tips about prepping/painting/decals/modding ?

These are part of a set from a now defunct company - Fujimoto Hobby. They've been out of production for almost a decade. I picked up a set on one of the Japanese auctions for an inflated but not terrible price.

gavino200, I haven't purchased any of these models, but I've bought other 3D printed parts for model aircraft, including some that had windows. Every part I've purchased was of a "transparent" material rather than white, although I use the term transparent loosely. They were all produced in what I describe as a frosted plastic, which is a fairly common material for 3D printing too.

Before purchasing a 3D printed part I check to see if there are optional plastic choices. Some makers offer choices, usually described as "smooth fine detail plastic" or for a slightly higher price "smoothest fine detail plastic." I tend to go for the up charge. I always do a light sanding on all parts with very fine sandpaper to smooth the texture as much as possible.

I didn't check any of the N-scale vehicles to see what type of plastic is available. Reaching out to the maker to see if they can print in transparent plastic might be an option.

Regarding windows, I suggest the following. If you can get the transparent plastic, sand it as smoothly as possible. Then paint everything but the clear parts. Then brush on Pledge Floor Gloss, Pledge FloorCare Multi-Surface Finish, or Future Floor Wax (the name keeps changing). The Floor Gloss (the newest name) fills in all the microscratches and makes the plastic as glass-like as possible. Granted, N-scale vehicle windows are microscopically small, so sanding may not be an option other than on the outside structure.

If the plastic is not transparent I recommend painting the window glass areas with light gray-blue, light blue, light gray, or in some cases a dark charcoal (but not quite black). After the paint has dried, paint over the window area with Testor's Model Master Clear Parts Cement and Window Maker. It puts a nice glass-like coating over the window area. If the window frames are thick I recommend doing two coatings of the Testor product. Because of the product's thickness, it has a tendency to form a significant meniscus near thick frames (frames that are thick in depth, not in width) which makes a somewhat curved look to the edges of the window instead of a flat pane of glass. A second coat helps minimize that.

A second possibility it to saw out the solid windows and use the Testor's product to create a clear window in the gap that is left. It works well. See photo 17_29_07 for an example of a window make entirely out of the Testor product.

I've uploaded 3 images of an airplane model in progress to provide examples of clear 3D parts and a Testor "window." For scale, the B-36 model is in 1/72 and is huge. The circular 3D part is about 3/8" diam. The Testor "window" is less than 1/4."

  • Photo 17_29_51 shows a clear circular 3D part looking from inside the fuselage out. The transparency is pretty good after my work on it.
  • Photo 17_29_07 shows a view of a different spot with a 3D part, but looking from the outside of the fuselage. The rectangular square is a hole (above and to the left of the 3D circular part) I cut into the fuselage and filled with the Testor's product.
  • Photo 033 is a different area, but still shows one of the circular plugs with the rectangular window in its more completed and painted state.

The resulting transparency is pretty good.

Yes, I have, fully assembled only though, in their store in Germany. It's very nicely done.

Good to know. Eventually I'll buy one. Right now I've got too many projects and not enough time.

It’s funny every time I find some odd detail to try out Tomytec eventually does it! I have the square brass tubing cut out to make the hydrollic lift for the truck and the ramps out of styrene as I wanted to do that a long time back. It was one of those projects I got everything and cut up but never got it finished! I wanted to put one of the smaller Tomytec cranes on a truck bed. I guess the lesson is get more time to finish things or just wait!
