How to make a speaker baffle?

I recently reorganized all my miscellaneous decoder related items. Among other things, I found a SoundTraxx Mini Cube 2 speaker. (see link). I no longer have the "baffle" It was really just a small plastic box that fit the dimensions of the speaker exactly. Is there anything else special about a baffle? Material type? Can I make one out of card? Do I need to use plastic? Any particular kind of plastic? How important are the dimensions of the box. I have the card that came with the speaker. The dimensions are 13 x 9 x 8.5 mm. Will I lose sound quality if I make it less tall? Or have careful soundwave calculations gone into the design of this thing?

ive seen folks fiddling with this for a while to try to get more umph out of n scale sound. Lots of experimenting. Low frequencies will be almost impossible to get in small speakers. But new tech in phones is sounding great, using the whole phone to resonate.

cheers
