A little thread to discuss strange, uncommon or just plain weird aspects, sales, operations or compositions that could be interesting for us modellers, because as the title says, there's always the prototype for evryting...

 

...like the one time when a popular italian DMU ended up running in Chicago leased to the Rock Island Railroad...

German ICE, French TGV Atlantique (the speed record set), Italian ETR X500, Swedish X2000 and Spanish Talgo Pendular all in one place during the first EuRailSpeed at Berlin Lichtenberg Station in 1991. The trains had to be pulled by DR BR 106 and 132, due to the different electrical systems and since large parts in and around Berlin were not electrified yet.

Three of these have been bought second-hand by a small railway maintainance company, Globalferr, altough only two are operational and only one is actually used.

Actually these Nohabs are one of just three types of Co'Co' locomotives that ever travelled on italian tracks.

 

Italian rails saw, and still see, quite the variety of second-hand diesel locos for small "Third-sector" private railways, industrial lines and maintainance companies.

We bought locos from pretty much evrywhere: (West) Germany (V220s, V160s, V80s, V100s, 218s, V36s, Kofs...), Belgium (Class 63 diesel locos, AM54/55 EMUs), Romania (Class 060DA) and the Czech Repubblic (CD Class 753),

Nohabs are pretty much immortal locos. Last summer I saw one in western Germany, pulling freight trains along the river rhine.

The 1999 "Kosovo Train For Life" was a special train carrying humanitarian aid for the people of Kosovo and surplus rolling stock for the Kosovo Railways, donated by Germany. It was hauled by three DRS Class 20 shunters, wich would stay in Kosovo for 6 months and then return to the UK.

Departing from Derby, it went trough France, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Repubblic, Hungary, Bulgaria and Macedonia.

Not shunters, though they look a bit like a stretched version of a Class 08; actually light freight locos (with some limited passenger haulage), usually couples in pairs with the cabs at opposite ends for better visibility.

I think this is what is called road switcher in the US. Btw. i think it's a really interesting piece of history.

In italy we call them "Locomotive da Manovra pesante" ("Heavy-haul Shunters") as they look (and are intended to work) like a standard shunter ("Locomotiva da Manovra" such as the D245) but are almost as powerful as a mainline diesel locomotive (such as the D345).

Both yes, the coach itself is still operating and no, as it does not serves pizza anymore.

 

Following the end of the TEE era services (replaced by EuroCity trains) and the european standardization of power/lighting/heating supplies to the coaches there was a surplus of GC ("gran confort)-type luggage-generator coach.

One of these was converted into a resturant one in collaboration with the Burghy catering agency (the same one that provided lunches on TGV, Thalys, AVE and Cisalpino high-speed trains).

 

The coach was classified as 61 83 88-90 999-5 "Pizza Express", and after the acquisition of Burghy by McDonald's (before the coach was even put in service) the catering was done directly by Trenitalia. It entered service in 1997 on the Venezia-Milano interregional services, but due to the bad scheduling (arriving in Milan at 18:45, you had all the time to go home and dine at the usual italian dinner time of 19:30/19:45), the low quality of the pizza (frozen and then heated when necessary heresy), and the high prices, it had a vey low usage.

 

It was also used on some services bound for Rimini, but by 2003/2004 it was used only rarely, mostly with special or chartered trains such as school trip serivces, and by 2007 it was retired from service.

 

It was later aquired by the Fondazione FS (the Trenitalia department responsable for the preservation of historic rolling stock) and repainted into the 1980's "bandiera" express trains  liviery (wich it never carried).

As of today it's in use by Fondazione FS to provide refreshments either on historic trains or at events such as the open days at various depots or stations.
