I'm a little bit surprised they're rebuilding the ex-Yamanote Line E231's for Musashino and Chūō-Sōbu Line service. Those trainsets have been hard-used in Yamanote Line service and the structural life left might not make it viable for transfer to these all-stops services. You'd think they would build an E235 variant for the Musashino and Chūō-Sōbu Lines instead.

Just a wild guess here, but it's entirely possible JR East has a pretty good idea of the state of their stock and how it can be best utilized.

Could be cars from the end of the production run, a little less wear.  Or maybe they're just a stop gap measure.  Constant accelerate-decelerate, load-unload, leaning into turns, etc, I also would expect that to take its toll after while and that these are fairly worn out.  Plus these are post-209 series, so they were built with the intention of not getting major refurbishment for significant life extension at the 15 year mark or whatever.  JR East must feel they can get some more service out of them.  I'm still wondering what will replace the E217 series.

You guys make it sound like the Yamanote line drivers think they're driving an F1 circuit...

In fact the 231-500 does accelerate at 3.0 km/h/s as opposed to 2.3 or 2.5 :grin.  The 800 subseries used for Metro Tozai interlining is the true speed demon at 3.3 km/h/s.  By "leaning into turns" I just meant roll (or pitch or yaw, I can never remember which).  Of course you are correct, JRE knows what they have, and they're reassigning them so obviously they believe the cars are not yet due for scrapping.
