Insane language, I remember a call with some utility provider where they were confirming my address, "Tokyo-to, XYZ-ku"... sudden pause when the caller realises the subdistrict could potentially be read "XXX-cho" or "YYY-machi" or "XXX-machi" or "YYY-cho", and that's not even considering the possibility of a silent conjunctive "ga" or a hitherto obscure, unknown reading of a common character.

I believe they are to melt the snow on the tracks.  I've seen them used to keep switches clear on conventional lines as well.

Going off at a tangent, I see the station is located in "滋賀県米原市米原", "Shiga-ken Maibara-shi Maihara"...

I never thought anything other than Maibara until the one time I passed through the area and saw a sign for Maihara, I assume for the expressway interchange mentioned on that page.  Also on that page:

 

滋賀県米原市（まいばらし）米原（まいはら）- Shiga-ken Maibara-shi Maihara

滋賀県米原市（まいばらし）米原西（まいばらにし）- Shiga-ken Maibara-shi Maibara-nishi

Had to check actual locations on Google maps and found: https://www.google.com/maps/@35.3138214,136.2891609,17.5z

 

In romaji, on the west side of the station, Maiharanishi, and on the east, Maihara.  I'm going to guess that Japanese Wikipedia is correct...

Would there be more of an effect of keeping snow buildup off the trains as well?  That's what I seem to get out of that.
