Interesting Lash-up

DD53+DD51+SL 9600?+mixed freight.  I really like the graffiti on the DD53, could a fluent member translate it?  I've never seen any Japanese trains modeled with that, I wonder if there are any decals available.

Love!! I love the DD53, probably my favourite JNR diesel.

The inscription on the front says "douryokusha" - (moving) power car. Why? Not sure. Maybe it's pulling and the other two are dead?

As an interesting aside, those kanji/hanja are read in Korean as "dongryeokcha"... which is the name given to certain passenger cars of the North Korean railway with pantographs and booster motors used in long trains... something probably unique to the DPRK.

Thanks Pashina!  What a strange place to write that, I would have thought it was part of the JNR union protests, but this sounds like something else.  I also love the JNR boxcab diesels, I hope Kato makes a model of the DD53 someday.

FWIW MicroAce makes one, I am strangely tempted.

The 9600 has had its connecting rods removed so it can be safely hauled dead-attached.

Cheers,

Mark.

Kiha I'm inclined to think you're right about the graffiti being related to union activity.  As far as I know the locomotive engineer union was distinct from the others, maybe that's why it says (more or less) locomotive.

Isn't it true today for the JR companies that snow sweeper locomotives are classified as mow equipment and could be driven by non locomotive engineers, so pretty much by anyone who has type qualification? (i seem to remember that this was emphasized in one of the railway journal episodes)

I've seen many photos of Hakubi Line trains that had steam and diesel power doubleheading, often with DD54s. My understanding is that they weren't very reliable. Which is a pity, because I think they're good looking units.

Cheers,

I think that's true of that small self-propelled snow removal equipment, yes.  Also JR West numbered their latest locos as a KIYA type rather than a typical locomotive designation, I'm not sure why they did that but it seems to group them with EMUs rather than DE10s and DD51s.

Actually, I believe it is part of the DMU naming scheme.  Ki is standard DMU car with both cab and motor, and Ya is crew car.

Yeah you're right, but either way they're not using conventional loco classification, and what I am wondering is whether or not that allows employees with or without particular qualifications to operate them, as kvp asked about.  Maybe Bikkuri knows :)
