EMS - a new record

HS shipped a package on Thursday, and I received it at 11 AM.

I was startled when the doorbell rang, as I wasn't expecting it until next week.

Pretty good. For me EMS and SAL don't really make a difference at all. Except for the price, of course.

My record for a package from Japan however is at less than 48h with DHL from Mandarake.

DHL is so fast. Sometimes faster than amazon prime!

sal almost always take at least two weeks for me. But just last week I received an order from amazon.com with free shipping from Japan that came via small packet sal in 5 days. That's a record for me with sp sal. I was half expecting it coming in 2017 with the Christmas season and all.

I had the exact opposite, my parcel took 48 hours to go from a suburban post office in Tokyo to reaching customs in Sydney which is normal, after it cleared customs it went to Australia Post's sorting and distribution facility at Chullora where it sat for 96 hours, it was only because I lodged an enquiry as to why it was taking so long that I got it the delivered the next day. Normally EMS takes 4 days from postage in Tokyo to my front door, this time it took 7 days due to the dysfunctional state that Australia Post has fallen into, they have embarked on a program of mass automation at the main distribution centres and have made many staff redundant. The big problem is the sorting machines fail to function properly and can't read the delivery labels, there have been many complaints about parcels being sent on national tours due to this, I had a parcel that I sent which only needed to go 30kms end up 900kms away, to add insult to injury the destination was only 5kms down the road from the Chullora facility which it went to be sorted. I have friends that work for Australia Post who have told me that they are not allowed to manually intervene with the sorting process unless the machines have made 3 mistakes with a parcel. There have been many instances where parcels posted in Melbourne to be delivered in suburban Melbourne have ended up being sent to Brisbane then back to Melbourne and then back up to Brisbane again, they have ended up doing 7200kms of travel when they should have only done about 50kms at the most.

My EMS usually comes in about 3 business days. It get priority in customs from what I understand. I actually had a parcel delivered last Sunday but I wasn't here.

Bill - are you in western or eastern Canada?

My EMS usually take 4-6 days, but it seems to largely depend on what day (of the week) it is shipped, and when it arrives at the local PO.

I'm in Belleville, ON between Toronto and Montreal.  My EMS usually fly direct to Toronto from Tokyo or Chubu International. From Toronto its another 2 hours on the 401.

EMS has gotten slower here in the DC area, to usually 3-4 days. As soon as it hits the us though it's here in a day 365 days a year as its express mail and comes from customs entry here in a day. They even bring the package separately usually in the morning, not the regular post.

EMS may be quite fast, but with destination Germany our customs probably eats up most of the time. Sometimes we even have to fetch our Japan parcels from the local office (in cases we have to open it and show them what's inside - model trains and dolls from Japan are suspect!).

And I do not understand why the local customs office is at a so remote place. Takes over an hour to reach it. :(

More bitter is if the parcel is fast (by EMS or Small Air Parcel), passes customs, is handed over to DHL and the last link, the "local idiot" doesn't find our house and sends it all the way back to Japan. Happened more than once.

I have noticed this too.

Several customers from Germany. Address is ok and comes up on google fine.

I guess they use a bad mapping system that is inaccurate or must be 100% typed a certain way not in a different order to the system has.

Similar thing happens in AUS but i think thats more AUS post being lazy.

I had something similar happen once when the lazy driver didn't ring my door bell (if he actually came here at all), or leave a door tag (ditto), so I didn't know the (SAL Registered) package was in the area, and it was sent back to Japan.

I also had that happen with a Fed-Ex package, and I had to drive to their depot to get it before it was returned.  I complained to them about the driver lying about being here (I was home all three times), but they denied it.  As a result, I now avoid Fed-Ex shipments if at all possible.

I guess the main problem is DHLs policy regarding "unknown" addresses.

For those who do not know, DHL is Germany's main parcel service. Every kind of international postal package (EMS, SAL, Economy, Express) is handled locally by DHL.

If an address can't be found, whether it's indeed because of a wrong address or the delivery driver just can't be bothered, the package will be directly shipped back to the sender. Other local parcel services actually have people looking into the case if a package can't be delivered before they actually return it to the sender.
