What did you do on your layout today? (N scale)

Actually getting back to original topic:

  1. excercising my rolling stock a little
  2. checking that “Nordic Sky” really will be OK
  3. working on a test harness for some electronics for the layout
  4. painting the house

The last one being top of the list!

Hi guys! Finished the Grennmax factory kit! I'm happy with the result. Now I have to finish some accesories from the kit (storage tanks, and others) and wait for some of the Tomytec industrial plant to arrive so I can start playing with everything and plan where to go with it ;)

Looking good.

I think I have that factory kit somewhere as well, but I doubt mine will end up looking like that :)

Finished my Centralplatz focal point.  All the sidewalk pieces are cut, fitted and glued in place. Tested clearances with a GT6N tram.  Changed structures to tall, narrow Greenmax, Tomix and Tomytec with some outstanding work to be done yet. The scrap .040 styrene from the first incarnation is piled in the background.

If you have so much space, you can go around with the buses and there is no need for a turntable.

Imho modern bus loops before rebuilt stations tend to look similar.

I have been thinking about it. The Tomix loop (or one made by myself) could fit there.

On the other hand, I already have the turntable so I think I could try to use it otherwise this would be just storage at home.

Btw, I have been changing my bus lane design quite a lot and also designig some bus system turnouts. Cheers!

I did not meant this kind of loop. You planned a parking lot and a double track bus system. The two roads leading to the turntable is fine. Just connect them together with a piece of road. Your buses from the arrival platform would go behind the parking space, turn right, go towards the front, turn right and go before the parking space, then connect back to the depature platform. This form a nice bus loop present at many modern stations. This is all, no Tomix single lane BRT loops or turntables are needed.

Bus system turnouts! Interested in what you have designed

I see, thanks for the info.

Would you have a link with some examples (pictures)? That could also help to see other details of a bus station.

It is a simple design. A wire place on a servo motor and the motor position is controlled by Arduino.

I made quick tests and it works. Obviously, it is not a design for temporary layouts but for permanent ones or modules.

As requested, here are some progress shots on how I make my hills and mountains.

Picture 1 - The rigid pink foam is used to create the general shape (glued with construction adhesive)

Picture 2 - I then use spray foam to make more organic shapes (In this case I used low expanding window and door foam) and trim of any foam that goes astray, like blocking the main line.

Picture 3 - Some household latex paint in a neutral colour for the base

Picture 4 - Once the paint is dry I glue Woodland Scenics clump foam with construction adhesive.  After the current batch of glue dries I will add more foam to areas that are still bare.

Kanazawa station for example has two bus loops on either side. But this is a really common arrangement for newer stations.

For a shared platform BRT setup look for Sakari station.

By combining the BRT platform arrangements and a bus loop with parking in the middle, it's possible to have fully automated bus traffic with only a few magnets under the roads next to the arrival and departure platforms.

Uff, amazing, no words... I know how finicky the kit is. Also, great choice of trucks!

Tried out a couple of new trams on the new layout. Found and resolved a clearance issue for the Fukuram tram on the center curves. The Hiroshima 3000 needs a bit of work for reliable running. The seems to be binding the front truck. Off to the LHS for some layout supplies.

When you realize, that the Kato island platforms have a wider roof than the platform base... This would be ok if i was using them as island platforms, but i intend to use some as a side platform on the edge of a ttrak module. This means the tracks have to be moved back, again. The original track edge to module edge distance would be 38 mm. The kato side platforms need 41 mm and with the roof overhang of 3 mm, 44 mm, but might as well make it 45 mm so the roofs are not fully on the edge. This means the tracks will be 7 mm inwards from the normal position, which is somewhat noticable. This is needed for transport safety as anything overhanging the edge of the modules could get ripped off during transport, especially if the modules are folded together in a transport frame, then put next to each other in a car.

ps: Why do i count mm-s on the modules? These are 210 mm deep modules and must contain the following: catenary mast, side platform, two tracks, island platform, track, catenary mast, steep hillside with dense foliage. The railway will take up around 175 mm, so that leaves 35 mm for the leaves. On a height of 60 mm, this means a roughly 2:1 slope.

I’d love to do a tram layout at some point... I’m waiting for more tram track though!

Haven't done anything to the layout as such, but I did finish cleaning up the attic / train room to the point where I can actually start doing stuff again. There's still a bunch of boxes that are stacked up in a corner that need to be sorted through, but I can do that little by little every now and then.

Other then that, I've started to once again catalog my trains. I've done this a couple of times before, but I end up not keeping track of new purchases, so the list gets outdated real fast. I'm also taking pictures of everything, including the boxes and the content, mainly for insurance purposes. Once I've taken pictures, I place the trains on the yard, so I can take a picture of all of them together as well. Needless to say, it will take a while, just putting a 16-car shinkansen on the track by itself is a lot of work, taking pictures and cataloging it takes even longer ;)

Just some random shots of my JR Shikoku running session this weekend.

1) Finally completed the Seto-Ohashi Line trio I had been wanting for years.

2) The new 223 series Marine Liner meets its predecessor, the 213 series Marine Liner.

3) Just your typical early 1990s JR Shikoku diesel scene.

I love that work bench Martijn!  I may have to order a set of those orginazers for myself.

Today I did some more work on the first t-track module, I added the first layer of ballast and will add a second layer this evening. Lesson learned, don't paint the area under the ballast brown!  It shows through and needs a much deeper ballast layer to hide it.  I'm currently debating whether to airbrush the track brown like many JNR lines seemed to be, or leave it standard grey of new ballast.

Love it Densha! I wish I had such a complete JR Shikoku fleet. I can't wait for Kato 2000 Series.

But aren't you missing a couple of consists? As far as I remember, the Seto-Ohashi Line sees/has also seen regular 113 Series and Kiha 185 Series service. Without counting the Sunrise Seto.
