Hi I am trying to develop a new layout to use my EF30 locos.

Could anyone confirm the electric locos and emus used on the Sanyo Line in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Thanks

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, sorry for the delay.  I had a bit of trouble finding images that prove what types were in western Honshu in the era you've specified until one result was an image on Hobidas's page for the "Wa ga Kokutetsu" magazine series...

A 153 series on regular express Sanyo service in February 1975 in Kasaoka, Okayama-ken: http://rail.hobidas.com/kokutetsu2/archives/2016/11/post_2104.html

A 181 series on limited express (I think) Hato service in March 1975 on the Senohachi grade in Hiroshima-ken: http://rail.hobidas.com/kokutetsu2/archives/2016/01/post_1978.html

A KIHA80 DMU on limited express Kamome, same time/place as above: http://rail.hobidas.com/kokutetsu2/archives/2016/01/post_1976.html

An EF59 and I think 181 series EMU at Hachihonmatsu, March 1975: http://rail.hobidas.com/kokutetsu2/archives/2016/01/ef59_1.html

A 181 EMU, a D51, and KIHA20 DMU at Hiroshima Station, September 1970: http://rail.hobidas.com/kokutetsu2/archives/2015/09/post_1892.html

A C11 and 181 series EMU on Shioji service at Okayama, June 1970: http://rail.hobidas.com/kokutetsu2/archives/2014/11/c11181.html

An 80 series EMU at Shimonoseki, November 1977: http://rail.hobidas.com/kokutetsu2/archives/2013/11/80_5.html

For local service EMUs, I'd think that the 80 series and 113s are a safe bet.  I'm not sure about the livery though, maybe all Shonan color?

Many thanks for the links and the information. I was not sure which EMUs worked along the Sanyo Line on local services.

Will have to add an 80 series to the roster as well as a 113. I think you are correct about the Shonan livery.

Once again thank you.

Thanks for the link to the wikipedia article Bill, I hadn't thought to check it.  Sometimes when I have too many browser tabs open, my eyes (and brain :grin) start to glaze over.  Finding information specific to far western Honshu in the '60s and '70s turned out to be a bit harder than I'd thought.  As Bikkuri has mentioned a few times, people didn't have the money for personal SLR cameras and leisure time to go use them until some time after the boom started.  I guess in major urban areas this could have been the mid to late '60s, but way down in Shimonoseki maybe it was later.  Then again, Fukuoka isn't far away.  I'm not sure, but unfortunately my googling didn't turn up the very specific and voluminous results I wanted :grin

The JNR Series 80 was cited as the beginning of the so-called Shonan style two window front end on a Tokyu 5000 series article. The move of Series 80 to the Sanyo line may be a by product of the Series O Shinkansen arriving on the scene in 1964.
