キ100 Russell snowplough by Tramway.

I've just started building this kit from Tramway. Straight from the box it's quite good, but since it will run ahead of the loco and attract attention I've made a few simple modifications. I removed the moulded handrails and ladders at the rear door and replaced them with freestanding details.

I was ready to paint the plough in my little portable spray booth, but the weather wouldn't cooperate. But then yesterday the rain stopped and the sun came out, so out into the yard I went. I managed to get the primer coat on before the rain started again. :)

 

 

 

I'm painting the plough before final assembly so I can install the window glazing afterwards, so it doesn't have to be masked during painting. The smokebox door that you can see is for one of my Kato D51s that needed repairs.

I'm actually considering getting the old N gauge Tomix model of the Ki100 snowplough. They go for a few hundred yen on Yahoo Auctions and will go very well with some random interurbans. Just like on the old Niigata Kotsu railway line:

That would look good. Or you could go for something more recent, such as Ki104 on the Konan Tetsudo in August of last year:

Awesome sauce! Now that is fantastic! Perfect idea for a painted train. Going to have to put that on the list to try to make a decal for a plow!

Ok just looked at a load of sumo cartoon pictures and none matched, but I think I can take the left side and square it up and mirror it for the right side. I have a kawai 100 that it can go on.

Jeff, as far as I know the sumo character was created specifically to decorate this plough. There's an article about it here:

As for my plough, it seems like every time I take my spray booth outside, the clouds roll in and the rain comes down. :(

 

But I managed to get one light coat of black paint on the plough before the weather sent me back inside. The coverage isn't great, but it's a start. Apparently it'll be sunny tomorrow...

I'm not going to weather the plough, as during the warmer months they tend to get overhauled and repainted, so I'm leaving it clean. The D51 propelling it is the one I bought a while back that needed repairs and a repaint. I've numbered it as D51200, as I had a "play" on that engine when I last visited Umekoji.

Excellent Mark!

 

Since I abhorr making snow scenes (did it once as a kit and the snow flocking found its way into everything, including inside motors!) so I'll just keep things other times of the year with a yard full of overhauled equipment waiting for the next winter!
