Endo Prus レ12000 refrigerator car

I'm building a couple of these refrigerator car kits. They're nice and simple to build, but painting them raises a question. I've seen one or two prototype photos where the roof might be black. And there are many models around with black roofs. But a black roof on an ice-cooled car doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Were they actually painted black, or did they just get very dirty?

Both are correct. Some were white and some were black. You'll have to pick a prototype car and work from the photos.

 

I have a #16 gauge one I picked up on Yahoo auctions completely assembled, painted and weathered, whoever did it painted the car with a white roof.

The first car is complete and ready to paint. And tomorrow's weather forecast is for a sunny day with almost no wind! :)

So far the weather's being cooperative, so I've managed to finish painting the refrigerator car, the Russell plough and a HobbyModel Tomu 60000 that I've had hanging around the workbench for ages. Final assembly, detailing and decaling to follow.

 

I love it when the sun shines! :)

Another one almost finished!

 

 

Just needs a bit of light weathering and some Dullcote to seal it. I deliberately painted the underframe with a grimy/weathered black mix rather than straight black as I think it's too dark and you lose too much detail in the shadows.

The shunter's step is a HobbyModel part. I had a couple of spare sprues of their brake parts, and so I used this instead of making one from scratch.

 

The eyebolts that hold the uncoupling lever are made by US manufacturer Tichy Trains. They're part number 3037. The lever itself I made out of brass wire.
