Out of curiosity, what's the difference between the Kiha23 and Kiha53?

The kiha 53 has two diesel engines, while the kiha 23 is single engined. Due to the space taken up by the second engine, a water tank had to be relocated to the passenger compartment of a kiha 53 car body, thus a blanked out space where otherwise a window would be as on the kiha 23. I believe this also is a feature of the kiha 52.

Thanks bb, good to know what the difference is between variants.

 

Presumably all of the JNR-era diesel cars had compatible control and brake schedules, going by the number of different classes or types that you see running in multiple. I amused myself one rainy afternoon last week by listing all the various lash-ups I've seen either in books or in photos online - it's a big and diverse list. :)
