wowzer.  they haven't updated their 16 car nozomi to a 8 car kodama yet.  but they are releasing this? haha

Perhaps Kato will use this opportunity to invest in tooling for the current 8 car 500 series. Although given the popularity of Evangelion, people would still buy the model even if the company used the existing tooling from the 16 car W formation.

I told my son he is going to have to sell a kidney looking at the retail price, one only hopes that our usual friendly suppliers have it marked down by 30%.

How's it going to be sold? Trying to understand the automatic translation of that web page has made my head explode... but I think there's gonna be some kind of lottery to decide who's gonna be able to buy it? If someone with japanese language knowledge can shed some light to this issue, I willl be very grateful :)

It will be on sale at [some event] in limited numbers and after that via the Kato stores and the Evangalion store(s).

Disclaimer: I'm still not entirely sure what an Evangalion is (something like a Gundam?) and the 500kei is way too pointy for my tastes, but the announcement did seem to cause an excited stir amongst those present.

Something along the lines of a bio mechanical robot-creature and the series centers around the religous symbolism of the first amalgameted church ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Futurama_-_First_Amalgamated_Church.jpg ) or something very much like that. :D :D :D

ps: Seriously, it's a giant bio-mecha-etc. against the alien monsters genre with technical stuff replaced by religious symbolism from whatever religion the writer could find. The key was to use all components without understanding and then add the usual young protagonists and some depression as the base tone.

A gundam or even better a transformers shinkansen would have been better but most people love the 1:1 themed joyful train, so the model will be popular.

Is it really 30000 yen for the n scale 8 car set? Licensing fees must have been quite high!

Exciting! Indeed a jaw dropper when Kato announced this... I would seriously expected Tomix to do this one...

Anyhow, allow me to shed a little more light into Evangelion:

Like what kvp has mentioned, the Eva is a giant, Bio-mechanical robot that is designed to battle the aliens that descent to earth. Spoiler alert! There were a total 18 angels in the main series, of course, actually, there was a huge debate if the first angel was the Eva 01 itself (controversial argument that has not seen the verdict)..

The 2nd angel was Lilith, by which was captured and sealed off in the Eva's underground secret lab, under 26 levels of thick steel plates. It seems that the Eva 00 has modelled after Lilith, but had major issues with instability of control... It was also said that if any angel were to meet with Lilith, it would mean the end of the world and the 3rd impact...

Here's a wiki just dedicated to Evangelion:

http://wiki.evageeks.org/Angels

The Eva feel what the pilot feels, if the pilot is sad, the mech is weakened... Also the pilot feels what the Eva feels, when the Eva is damaged in battle, the pilot feels it too in the same portion, example, when the Eva's right arm is damaged, the pilot right arm is disabled.

It seems that the Eva can only be piloted by teenagers around the age of 14-15, right when the 2nd impact happened (in 2000) and the angels attack (in 2015), with the Eva 01 (purple) having special connections with the male protagonist Ikari Shinji (there's a story behind this, but I guess that would be a spoiler alert)

There is also the Eva 00 (yellow/ blue) series, which is the prototype, and piloted by Rei Ayanami, which seems to have a little 'relationship' with the Shinji. More spoiler alert here ~

There is then the Eva 02 (Red) series, piloted by ace Souyu Asuka Langry, who is too confident of her abilities and proud to be an Eva pilot.

I can share more story on the Eva, but it would contain much Spoilers in it and I wouldn't like to spoil it for those who are planning to watch this...  :)

I'd get it for 30000 yen, but it sounds like it might be real hard to get.

Initially at least, no telling whether Kato will re-release it at a more standard price half a year after the first release ;)

you guys should watch it. only 26 episodes

No offence meant, but this floats my boat like a lead balloon flies ;)

Maybe I should offer a purchase service...

Can we say emperor's car?! Shades of other limited souvenir sales in the last few years?

Think the first convention sale of the emperor's car was ugly, now you will have anime fans in the mix at the first few events these are sold at. Wonder what kato is going to do to not have the mob scene that lost them a lot of face with the emperor's car fiasco and apology. No excuse this time as I don't think there has been a train that's stirred up this much general interest in a long time!

At this price I expect the licensing and investment in tooling and special painting experimenting they will want to eventually sell as many of these as possible in the long run. Short run limited numbers in the beginning gets them a lot of exposure and bragging rights.

Khara (the studio) is gradually increasing their licensing fees and are banking on Eva fans paying ANYTHING to own this in anticipation of the fourth movie. This release definitely isn't geared toward the model railroad crowd but rather the anime crowd that will pay anything for 'exclusive' merch. My advice: if you really want it wait for 2-3 years and then look on Mandarake.

Also I really wish they had done a second train in Unit 2's colors. The Unit 1 colors look good on the Eva but I always though they looked a bit busy on the train.

Been a while since I last been on this forum site.  I blame work.

Anyways...  Evangalion has been getting a bit more steam of late thanks to Godzilla: Resurgence and the possibility of a Godzilla/ Eva crossover.  However, I have read from Godzilla forums that this just hype and teaser material because the director of Evangalion is directing the new Toho Godzilla.

More info with the link.

I've had a ride on the real thing! It was the highlight of my last trip, train-wise. A single Series 500 service in Unit 01 livery running on the Sanyo Line.

Unreserved car 2 is the car with themed seats, curtains and doors. Even the announcement jingle is the show's theme. Car 1 was made into an exhibition area, with a couple diorama-style exhibits. You can also apply in advance for this amazing experience of sitting in EVA Unit 01's cockpit, and play a minigame, if only for a minute...

Needless to say I'm a big fan of the show and director Anno. The guy's been involved in some of the greatest anime.

Instead of waiting for 2-3 years to got it second probably, I prefer to wait for other factory release with friendlier price.. hopefully...

Just imagine, if other shinkansens also received similar treatment just like 500EVA, getting nicely re-liveried / re-painted prior to their end of service life, it would be a massive wallet damage for me.. but I guess this will also happen to E3 Genbi as well.. luckily the E3 Toreiyu was easier..
