  1. I am looking to buy a decoder for my E235 I have looked through multiple forums and not found a thing, does anybody know?
  2. JR East announced Tuesday, Dec. 7 that it will install their proprietary ATACS on the Yamanote Line and the Omiya-Higashi Kanagawa section of the Keihin Tohoku line in the period 2028-2031, in conjunction with ATO operation including a wider set of lines in the Tokyo region. ATACS is a moving block system that is equivalent to ETCS Level 3. ATACS is currently in operation on the Senseki Line, Saikyo Line, and Koumi Line. https://trafficnews.jp/post/113288 JR East press release: https://www.jreast.co.jp/press/2021/20211207_ho03.pdf
  3. Recent broadcast on NHK general about the redevelopment of the Shibuya Station area, with a focus on the opening of the Saikyo Line platform adjacent to the Yamanote Line platform, and the movement of tracks as well as the railway bridge crossing the old Oyama Road leading to Dougenzaka and the Shibuya Scramble intersection. 1000 construction workers and specialists along with 100 vehicles were given 52 hours to do the task, while observing covid-19 countermeasures. Everything had to be finished at the end of 52 hours and full restoration of Saikyo Line services. Everything was timed to the minute, with each person tasked with specific duties. There was even a mock bridge set up off site to rehearse the move and set procedures. Other parts of the documentary explain the redevelopment of the station area to improve passenger and pedestrian circulation and safety in the event of natural disasters, in coordination with four different railway companies.

    Gotanda Station

http://www.jnsforum.com/community/topic/11049-n-gauge-yamanote-station/?hl=%2Byamanote+%2Bstation In this previous thread i mentioned the idea of a Yamanote Line layout, centered around a station. After a busy period i decided to dig it up and proceed with it. As suggested by many of you i will be building a small station. Specifically Gotanda, in early 2000s, as depicted in Densha De GO! Final, with variations up to 2014 (before platform gates) and down to the late 90s. Circled in blue is the zone i'm going to make. The limits will be marked by the Metropolitan Expressway No.2 on the Left and the elevated Tokyu Ikegami Line platform on the right. Both will hide the line exiting from the module. The designated obseravtion point is about where the "Bank Of TMU Gotanda Branch" marker is. The opposite side will be background with half-buildings to give it depth. To maximise portabilty and minimize storage needings the layout is intended as a modular one. Specifically it will be composed of 6 modules (the station and the storage modules will divide in half). The tracks in the station module will be made using long flexible tracks, wile the curved sections will be made with standard Kato Unitrack. The control systems for the JR East line will be analog, as there is no need for digital, while the Ikegami line will be static, at first. Then it may be extended with an additional module, to make it operational, with a sort of Point-To-Point automated operation. Rolling Stock will be: - E231-500s (since 2002) , Yamanote Line, with 6-door cars. - 205 series (since 1985) , Yamanote Line and Saikyo Line, with 6-door cars. - E231-1000 (since 2001) , Shonan Shinjuku Line. Plus additional possibilities: - 115, 211, 215 and E217 series for the Shonan Shinjuku Line (from 2001 to 2004, because the rolling stock on this line was standardized to E231-1000s in 2004) - Narita Express services with 253 and 259 series -Odoriko Expresses with 185, 251 and 259 series -TWR Rinkai Line 70-000 series -Freight Services with EF64s, EF210 and EH500s. -189 series "Upgrade Azusa" And non regular services too, like depot transfers: Skyblue 201 series (possibly Keiyo Line) http://blog.goo.ne.jp/chuoline_201/e/96a78a654a9e91acaf35b35afc295410 Joban Line E231-0 https://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/trainmania2/14062623.html The Ikegami line will be either a 1000, 7700 or 7600 series 3-car train. The Freight Line might be as well used as a sort of "parade line". Inspirational videos: Comments and Suggestions are well appreciated!
  6. Today i was playing Densha De GO!, while having a nice drive on the Yamanote line, i suddently spotted this freight train between Meguro and Gotanda stations, heading towards Shinjuku. But according to wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamanote_Line#History ): "A major explosion on the Yamanote Freight Line in Shinjuku in 1967 led to the diversion of freight traffic to the more distant Musashino Line. " Since the game is set between the late 90s and the early 2000s , why is there a freight train here? Also where it may be going? As far i know there aren't freight yards anywhere on the western section of the Yamanote Line (except for Shinagawa).
  7. An internet survey conducted last month of 703 adults living in the Tokyo Metropolitan area yielded these results(selected reasons follow): Best 3 1. Yamanote Line (convenient, the core of the transport network) 2. Tokyu Toyoko Line (runs through nice neighborhoods, passengers are fashionable) 3. Tokyu Den-en Toshi Line (same as above) Worst 3 1. JR Saikyo Line (full of chikan) 2. JR Keihin Tohoku Line (dirty image) 3. JR Joban Line (full of drunks, delinquents from the boondocks i.e Chiba, Ibaraki) http://bizmakoto.jp/makoto/articles/1505/26/news080.html
  8. Ukiyo over on the SSC forum posted this interesting article: http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Mounted-sensors-to-allow-JR-East-to-screen-for-safety-using-in-service-trains Saw one these sensor-equipped trains last winter: http://www.jnsforum.com/community/topic/9548-keihin-tohoku-line-e233-track-monitor/?hl=%2Bkeihin+%2Btohoku+%2Bline
  9. Early this morning, catenary poles on the Yamanote Line between Kanda and Akihabara fell over, disrupting services on both the Yamanote Line and Keihin Tohoku Line. Apparently the poles were not in use (decommissioned), but due to their age, collapsed. Service was disrupted for 9 hours, resuming again around 15:30. More news with specifics is to be out later this evening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6G2SYEuVMc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoUDopRUwr4

  11. Spotted over at SSC, from a post by Sr. Horn. It will be called the 235 series. Introduction in autumn of 2015. The trains will use either hybrid or full silicon carbide inverters, replacing the silicon inverters used on previous designs. Instead of TIMS, a new system developed by JR East, called INTEROS, will be installed, offering 10x faster transmission speed. http://www.jreast.co.jp/press/2014/20140701.pdf

    a snowy afternoon in Yanaka

While speaking with cteno4 at the JRM display in New York, he mentioned that the front-view videos posted here are useful as examples for layouts. Yesterday I happened upon the video below, which shows some very close-up detail, if covered with snow. This is a walking tour around the Yanaka neighborhood, which is on the inside of the Yamanote loop between Nippori and Nishi-Nippori stations. Uploaded by taoyakani, his text with the video indicates that the path of the walk is Miurasaka (slope) → cedars at temple town → Kan'eiji ( temple) → Yanaka cemetery → Nippori station. The recording was made starting at 1:47PM on February 14th, 2014. Start near the bottom of Miura Hill: http://goo.gl/maps/7kLZ9 Kan'ei Temple: http://goo.gl/maps/03O0A Nippori Station: http://goo.gl/maps/AnmqJ
  13. For forum members in Japan, another two hour quiz/trivia program focusing on the Yamanote Line. The program is "[Onegai Ranking Gold]- Actually quite amazing Yamanote Line stations selected by railfans- 2 hour special" 18:56~20:54 on TV Asahi, Saturday Sept. 21 I figure 80+% of program content will be fluff, but there will be a segment on rolling stock maintenance, and a human interest story about a female driver.
  14. For forum members in Japan, Fuji TV will be airing a two hour special tonight (July 6, 7pm~) profiling the Yamanote Line. It is Fuji TV's information program "Real Scope Hyper": http://www.fujitv.co.jp/b_hp/realscope/index.html
