  1. JR East announced Tuesday, Dec. 7 that it will install their proprietary ATACS on the Yamanote Line and the Omiya-Higashi Kanagawa section of the Keihin Tohoku line in the period 2028-2031, in conjunction with ATO operation including a wider set of lines in the Tokyo region. ATACS is a moving block system that is equivalent to ETCS Level 3. ATACS is currently in operation on the Senseki Line, Saikyo Line, and Koumi Line. https://trafficnews.jp/post/113288 JR East press release: https://www.jreast.co.jp/press/2021/20211207_ho03.pdf
  2. An internet survey conducted last month of 703 adults living in the Tokyo Metropolitan area yielded these results(selected reasons follow): Best 3 1. Yamanote Line (convenient, the core of the transport network) 2. Tokyu Toyoko Line (runs through nice neighborhoods, passengers are fashionable) 3. Tokyu Den-en Toshi Line (same as above) Worst 3 1. JR Saikyo Line (full of chikan) 2. JR Keihin Tohoku Line (dirty image) 3. JR Joban Line (full of drunks, delinquents from the boondocks i.e Chiba, Ibaraki) http://bizmakoto.jp/makoto/articles/1505/26/news080.html
  3. Thought some people might like this. Started on Dec.25. Location near Saitama Shintoshin Station.
  4. Ukiyo over on the SSC forum posted this interesting article: http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Mounted-sensors-to-allow-JR-East-to-screen-for-safety-using-in-service-trains Saw one these sensor-equipped trains last winter: http://www.jnsforum.com/community/topic/9548-keihin-tohoku-line-e233-track-monitor/?hl=%2Bkeihin+%2Btohoku+%2Bline
  5. Early this morning, catenary poles on the Yamanote Line between Kanda and Akihabara fell over, disrupting services on both the Yamanote Line and Keihin Tohoku Line. Apparently the poles were not in use (decommissioned), but due to their age, collapsed. Service was disrupted for 9 hours, resuming again around 15:30. More news with specifics is to be out later this evening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6G2SYEuVMc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoUDopRUwr4
  6. Spotted yesterday at Yokohama Station, an e233 set in revenue service (not a test/maintenence train) on the Keihin Tohoku Line, with an intermediate car equipped with a track monitoring device, which includes an LED setup with camera, and a laser device, to detect track irregularities and conditions. It makes for a little light show at night. somebodys's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx7eg0T2Cm0 JR East press release: https://www.jreast.co.jp/press/2013/20130502.pdf *these trains will run until March, between Ofuna and Omiya. If you are in the area in the evening, keep a lookout for them.
  7. Railway Safety Slipping? The Tokyu Toyoko line rear end crash and now this?! Apparently at 1:11 on the morning of the 23rd an out of service 10 car keihin tohoku line train appears to have struck an engineering works trolley at Kawasaki (looks from photographs like overhead line equipment). The impact overturned the first car and derailed two others. The conductor (34) and driver (25) both escaped with minor injuries. The accident has resulted in the suspension of operations between Kamata and Tsurumi stations.
